Codex of the Last Dawn

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (book) Legendary
requires attunement by a spellcaster
Charges: 7 (regains at dawn)

A centuries-old volume bound in charcoal-black leather, its cover etched with silver sigils that shimmer like starlight. The pages inside are a pale ash-gray, edges ember-orange when fresh, and the script shifts subtly as if alive. The book hums with a soft, mournful lullaby when opened, and a distant thunderclap seems to echo whenever a page is turned.

Prophetic Lore While you hold the Codex, you gain proficiency in Arcana and History if you lack it. As an action, you may spend 1 charge to consult the book. You gain advantage on a single Arcana or History check to recall information about calamities or apocalyptic lore, and the DM reveals one non-specific clue about a forgotten catastrophe.
Dawn's Veil Expend 2 charges to unleash a 20-foot-radius aura of bright daylight centered on you for 1 minute. Hostile creatures in the area must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 round; undead and fiends have disadvantage on attack rolls while the aura lasts. The aura sheds bright light in 40 feet and dim light for an additional 40 feet.
Harbinger's Wake Expend 3 charges to unleash a 40-foot cone of radiant energy. Each creature in the cone must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 8d8 radiant damage and be blinded for 1 round; on a successful save, they take half damage and are not blinded. The cone's energy lingers as dim light in a 20-foot radius for 1 minute.
Forgotten Apocalypse The Codex contains the memory of a long-forgotten apocalypse. Reading from its pages may alter reality in subtle ways, as the world remembers and hushes its end. The DM may allow the book to shape events in your campaign in line with the apocalypse.

Lore

The Codex of the Last Dawn was forged by the archmage Lymirath the Sable Archivist as a failsafe against catastrophe. It was sealed within a vault beneath a ruined city and survived the fall of empires, only to reappear in the hands of scholars who fear end-times and wish to avert themโ€”or to wield the end itself.

History

Created over a century ago after a near-apotheosis failed, the Codex was bound with a vow to keep the apocalypse imprisoned. It has changed hands across continents, leaving cryptic clues and weathered ruins in its wake. Notable owners include Arin Voss, a chronomancer who kept its power in check, and Valara the Dusk-Watcher, who believed destroying the world would end all painโ€”and learned the book chooses its bearer as much as the bearer chooses the book.
