Coastlines, roads, alleyways, and distant horizons appear wherever tears have fallen, while tiny colored symbols mark the emotions that called them forth. A fresh tear vanishes into the cloth without leaving it damp, and a new thread immediately begins tracing the place of its origin.

Cartography of Grief Whenever a creature's tears touch the handkerchief, its embroidery changes to include a tiny, perfectly accurate map of the place where those tears were shed. The map also displays a small stitched symbol indicating the strongest genuine emotion behind the tears, such as grief, fear, pain, relief, joy, or love. Tears created solely by illusion, poison, or mundane irritation appear as blank white marks. The handkerchief can preserve an unlimited number of locations, though older maps become smaller and more intricate.

Known Whereabouts As an action, the attuned creature can touch one location depicted on the handkerchief and learn the direction and approximate distance to that location, provided it is on the same plane of existence. This property cannot identify a creature currently at the location.

The Truth Catches While holding the handkerchief, the attuned creature cannot knowingly speak a deliberate lie. If it attempts to do so, its voice catches before the falsehood is spoken, though it may remain silent, answer evasively, or state what it honestly believes. The handkerchief does not prevent misunderstandings, mistaken statements, opinions, or lies told by a creature that genuinely believes them to be true.

Unvarnished Answer When a creature within 30 feet of the attuned wearer makes a statement, the wearer can use a reaction and expend 1 charge to learn whether that creature knowingly stated something it believed to be false. The handkerchief reveals only whether the statement was a deliberate lie; it does not reveal the truth, the creature's intentions, or the reason for the lie.

Lore

The handkerchief is said to have been made by Ilyra Venn, a royal embroiderer whose three sons went to war and never returned. She stitched the first map from her own tears, then offered the cloth to mourners at the palace gates. Courtiers soon discovered that the handkerchief recorded not merely where people wept, but why. It became notorious for exposing false condolences, feigned heartbreak, and marriages built on polite lies.

History

The handkerchief passed through the hands of queens, inquisitors, grieving parents, and one celebrated thief who used its maps to retrace every place he had ever cried. It disappeared for nearly a century after a duke tried to burn it rather than answer a question in its presence. The cloth was recovered from the duke's sealed tomb, folded neatly beside a map of every place he had secretly begged for forgiveness.
