The Bell Before Truth
This small handbell is cast from tarnished silver veined with black iron. Its surface is engraved with hundreds of tiny sentences, most of them scratched through as though disproved. A single dark-blue sapphire hangs inside the bell as its clapper, and no hand can stop it from swinging when the future approaches. Its chime is pure, delicate, and impossible to mistake for anything else.
Lore
The bell is said to have been made by Saint Orvessa, a prophet who grew weary of people asking whether her visions were true. She forged it so that truth itself would answer, then discovered that truth had little interest in being kind. Kings have hidden it in vaults, lovers have thrown it into wells, and inquisitors have used it to expose liars. Every known owner eventually tried to destroy it. None succeeded.
History
The bell first appeared in the records of the city of Velis after it rang one minute before the city's gates opened to an invading army, despite the guards swearing they would hold them. Centuries later, it belonged to the notorious barrister Pellin Voss, who used it to win every case until it rang during his closing argument. Voss had honestly believed his client was innocent; the bell revealed that belief to be the only false statement he had made all day. The bell vanished from the courthouse afterward and was recently recovered from the flooded crypt of Saint Orvessa.
