The Apologist's Whetstone

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (whetstone) Rare
requires attunement by a creature proficient in Persuasion or with proficiency in a martial weapon

This palm-sized whetstone is a slab of dark gray riverstone veined with thin lines of tarnished silver. One side is polished smooth, while the other is rough enough to rasp sparks from steel. A tiny brass plaque is set into its face, engraved with the words, "I was wrong." The stone is always faintly damp, and when held near a sharpened blade it smells of rain, cold iron, and extinguished candles. If its bearer speaks cruelly or refuses responsibility, the silver veins darken like old bruises.

Edge of Admission As an action, you can draw the whetstone across one weapon that deals slashing or piercing damage, sharpening it for 1 hour. The next time before the duration ends that a creature wielding the weapon makes a Charisma (Persuasion), Charisma (Deception), or Charisma (Intimidation) check, it can add 1d4 to the roll. Once this benefit is used, it ends.
A Sharper Point A weapon sharpened by the whetstone deals an extra 1d4 psychic damage to a creature that has knowingly lied, broken a promise, or betrayed an ally within the last 24 hours. This extra damage can be dealt only once per turn.
Apology Made Steel When you fail a Charisma (Persuasion) check made to apologize, reconcile, or accept responsibility, you can reroll the check and must use the new roll. If the reroll succeeds, you regain 2d6 hit points and the whetstone cannot be used again in this way until the next dawn. If the reroll fails, you take 2d6 psychic damage and have disadvantage on Charisma checks made against the creature you addressed for 1 hour.
Burden of the Unsaid While attuned to the whetstone, you can sense when a creature within 30 feet is withholding a genuine apology or admission of fault, though you learn neither the truth of the matter nor the details. The whetstone grows warm when such a creature speaks.
Confession's Edge Once per dawn, when a creature within 30 feet willingly confesses a harmful deed and sincerely apologizes, you can use your reaction to grant that creature advantage on its next saving throw against being frightened or charmed within the next 24 hours. If the confession is insincere, the benefit is wasted.

Lore

The whetstone is said to sharpen not only edges but the words used to mend what edges have cut. Its magic rewards honesty without making forgiveness easy. Bards claim that every apology spoken over it becomes a little more precise, while every false apology leaves a hairline crack in the stone's silver veins.

History

The stone was made by Orven Vale, a famed swordsmith who publicly accused his closest companion, the diplomat Serai Nymm, of treason. Orven's accusation began a purge that ruined Serai's family and cost dozens of lives. When the truth emerged, Orven forged a ceremonial blade for Serai and carved the whetstone from the riverbank where he delivered his apology. Serai accepted neither the sword nor the apology, but she kept the stone until her death. It later vanished from her estate and now appears in the hands of those who have harmed others with sharp weapons or sharper words.
