The Last Refrain
This palm-sized music box is carved from dark walnut polished smooth by countless hands. Its lid bears a tiny silver engraving of two figures separated by a river of stars, while a tarnished brass crank turns beneath a setting of pale blue glass. When opened, its delicate steel cylinder turns without visible mechanism, and the sound that emerges is impossibly intimate: faint, imperfect, and unmistakably remembered.
Lore
The box is said to have been made by a bereaved clockmaker who could not remember the voice of her lost daughter. She enchanted its mechanism not to summon the dead, but to preserve the small songs people carry unknowingly in their hearts. Those who hear a refrain often recognize no melody at firstโonly the sudden certainty that someone, somewhere, once thought of them with tenderness.
History
The first Last Refrain was discovered in the abandoned workshop of the clockmaker Maelin Voss, whose entire family vanished during a winter crossing. Since then, a handful of copies have appeared in the collections of undertakers, spies, and grieving nobles. Each box is believed to contain a different silver cylinder, cut from the original mechanism and set into a newly made case. No artisan has successfully created a new cylinder.
