Mirror of the One Reflection

🔮 Wondrous Item (mirror) Rare
requires attunement by a spellcaster
Charges: 1 (regains at never)

This oval mirror is set in a tarnished, soot-blackened frame of wrought silver and obsidian. The glass is flawless but seems to shimmer with a ghostly inner light when a life is near. Carved along the frame are intertwining glyphs of eyes and water motifs, glittering pale blue. Four tiny onyx stones sit at the cardinal points, catching light like dark stars. The back bears a sigil that resembles a waiting doorway, as if the mirror is a passage rather than a surface.

Trap of the Eternal Reflection As an action, you touch the mirror and name a humanoid you can see within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or have the reflection of their body trapped inside the mirror forever. Their living body remains unaffected, but their image is imprisoned behind the glass as a sentient echo. The trapped reflection is a distinct, intelligent entity bound to the mirror; it can communicate with you telepathically through the mirror surface (range 120 feet) and may offer knowledge, memories, or warnings. Once a reflection is trapped, the mirror cannot trap another. This use consumes 1 charge and does not recharge.
Whispered Counsel While a reflection remains trapped, the attuned can spend an action to converse with it through the mirror. For up to 10 minutes, the trapped reflection can answer questions posed by the attuned (up to 3 questions per casting) with a truthful answer to the best of its knowledge. The reflection’s knowledge is limited to what it could recall in life or what it learned while bound in the mirror; the DM determines accuracy. This ability recharges after a long rest.

Lore

The Mirror of the One Reflection was forged by a hidden guild of glasswrights who believed a person’s essence could be bottled within a single pane. Legends tell of a watcher who trapped a rival’s reflection to learn their deepest secrets; since then, the mirror has passed through many hands—each bearer hearing the trapped voice in their dreams and finding themselves altered by its knowledge.

History

Origin shrouded in secrecy, the mirror’s earliest owners were merchants and mages who sought power over memory. It surfaced repeatedly during epochs of war and intrigue, each time leaving behind rumors of a captured reflection that speaks in a voice not its own. Its current whereabouts are unknown to most, obscured by whispers of vanished rooms and glass that never seems to warm to touch.
