The Four-Way Lantern
A crossroads inn where every road leads somewhere different—and one locked door leads somewhere worse
The Four-Way Lantern stands beneath a leaning sign at a crossroads where four roads meet, though no two travelers agree on how they reached it. Inside, firelight glows on damp cloaks, unfamiliar maps, and a black iron door that has never opened in living memory. The innkeeper welcomes all arrivals, but quietly records which road each guest claims to have taken.
Atmosphere
Rain ticks against the windows even when the sky outside is clear, and the common room smells of woodsmoke, wet leather, onion stew, and something faintly metallic beneath the floorboards. Travelers speak in low voices over mismatched mugs while the front door opens onto a different landscape for each arrival: moorland, desert, pine forest, or a moonlit bridge. The hearth fire burns blue whenever someone lies about the road they used.
Notable features
Four exterior doors stand around the common room, each marked with a weather-worn symbol rather than a name; opening one reveals the road by which the opener most recently arrived. A brass route-board behind the bar holds tiny iron pins that move by themselves to mark guests' origins, and pulling one free causes the corresponding road to vanish until dawn. At the end of the upstairs corridor is a black iron door without hinges, keyhole, or handle; its surface is warm, and faint knocking sometimes answers from the other side.
Who you'll meet
Mara Venn, the one-eyed innkeeper, offers free lodging in exchange for a truthful account of every road traveled; she knows more about the inn than she admits. Brother Caldus, a cheerful pilgrim with no shadow, insists he has stayed here for twelve years and begs the party not to open the black door. Nessa Quill, a mapmaker whose maps redraw themselves overnight, will pay handsomely for a rubbing of the door's symbols.
Secrets & dangers
The inn is built around a sealed crossroads shrine, and the black door is the shrine's missing fourth boundary: opening it would let a hungry road-spirit enter, wearing the face of someone the party trusts. The door can be opened only when four guests simultaneously touch the route-board pins representing roads that no longer exist. Travelers who leave by the wrong door arrive at their destination missing one cherished memory, while anyone who destroys a door finds the inn's cellar filling with fast-rising black water.
Plot hooks
- A guest vanishes after opening the wrong exterior door, and the party must follow a road that exists only in that guest's stolen memory.
- Mara Venn asks the party to recover the fourth route-board pin from a ruined town before another traveler accidentally opens the black iron door.
- Brother Caldus's shadow appears beneath the sealed door, whispering one character's name and promising to return something they lost long ago.
