The Axe of the Rage

⚔️ Weapon (greataxe) Rare
requires attunement by a creature with at least 3 levels in barbarian or a melee-focused class
Damage 1d12 slashing
heavy two-handed special
Charges: 1 (regains at never)

The Axe of the Rage is a massive gleaming greataxe forged from a dark, storm-black metal. Its blade bears jagged runes that glow faintly with a sickly crimson light. The grip is wrapped in tanned leather dyed the color of dried blood, and a single crimson gemstone is set into the quillion, pulsing softly with every heartbeat of its bearer. When drawn, a cold wind seems to hiss along its edge, and the air around the wielder fills with a palpable, primal energy.

+1 to attack and damage The Axe of the Rage grants a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon.
Rage Trigger (reaction) When an ally you can see within 30 feet is hit by an attack, you can use a reaction to enter a rage for 1 minute without expending a rage point. While raging, you gain the standard benefits of a barbarian's rage (resistance to damage from nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing; advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws; +2 to damage with melee weapon attacks). The rage ends early if you fall unconscious, if your rage duration ends, or if you choose to end it (no action required). You can use this feature once per long rest.
Enflamed Frenzy upon Hit Whenever you hit a creature with this weapon, that creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be Frenzied for 1 round. While frenzied, the target must use its action to make a melee attack against the nearest creature within 5 feet of it (including allies) or, if none, the closest creature it can reach. The target may make a new saving throw to end the frenzy at the end of its turn. While the target is frenzied, it has no benefit from rage and is treated as unprepared for typical combat tactics.

Lore

Legends tell of a warlord who carved his name into the mountains by driving his foes into a frenzy with this very blade. The axe was said to drink the anger of those nearby, amplifying it into a weapon that could turn allies into roaring storm-fronts of vengeance. It is believed the weapon was forged by a storm god’s chosen smith and tempered in the tears of defeated leaders. The axe seeks to bind its wielder to the will of righteous rage, but it can just as easily lash out against friend and foe alike if misused.

History

Forged in the shadow of a besieged citadel, the Axe of the Rage changed hands through a dozen skirmishes. It passed from warlord to warlord, each time granting overwhelming fury to its bearer and a dangerous, sometimes uncontrollable urge to lash out at the nearest target. The current owner, a renowned tactician-turned-barbarian, found that the weapon’s power aligns best with those who can channel their fury for a larger purpose, rather than indulging in mere slaughter. The weapon’s glint grows brighter as it senses allied blood spilled by its wielder’s hands.
