The Confidential Keyring

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (key ring) Rare
requires attunement by a creature capable of knowingly keeping a secret

The Confidential Keyring is a loop of blackened silver, cold even in sunlight, with a tiny empty clasp shaped like a closed eye. Its keys grow rather than being forged: each begins as a slender silver barb that slowly unfolds into a distinct key over the course of a night. No two keys look alike. Some bear teeth like thorn branches, while others have bows engraved with half-erased names, shut mouths, or watching eyes. When a key is used, its metal flakes away into fine gray dust that smells faintly of extinguished candles.

Keys Born of Silence Whenever you deliberately keep a meaningful secret for 24 consecutive hours, a new key grows from the ring at the next dawn. A meaningful secret is information you know to be true, have intentionally concealed from at least one creature who would reasonably want to know it, and have not previously used to create a key. The DM determines whether a secret qualifies. The ring cannot create more than one key from the same secret.
Lockpick's Answer Each key created by the ring can be used to open one nonmagical lock, regardless of its quality or complexity. The key reshapes itself to fit the lock when inserted. After the lock is opened, the key turns to dull iron and falls from the ring. A key cannot open a lock that is barred from the other side, nor can it bypass a magical lock or a magical effect such as arcane lock.
Secrets Have Weight If you voluntarily reveal a secret that created an unused key, that key becomes brittle and useless at the next dawn. If another creature discovers or extracts the secret without your consent, the key is unaffected.
The Collector's Certainty A mysterious collector knows the ring's exact location at all times while it remains on the same plane of existence as the collector. No mundane disguise, container, or concealment prevents this knowledge. The collector does not automatically know who carries the ring, what secrets created its keys, or what the ring's powers are, but always knows where the ring is.

Lore

The ring is said to have been made by Veyra Sabletongue, a royal spymaster who believed every secret was a door waiting to be opened. Veyra commissioned it after learning that the greatest vaults in the world were protected not by locks, but by information no one else possessed. The ring's keys opened hidden prisons, forbidden archives, sealed tombs, and once, according to legend, the private chamber of a dead god. Every owner eventually learns the same unsettling truth: someone called the Curator of Unspoken Things is searching for it and already knows exactly where it lies.

History

Veyra vanished after using the ring to enter a vault beneath the capital and keeping a secret that could have ended a dynasty. The ring passed through the hands of assassins, archivists, smugglers, and at least one notorious archmage before disappearing during a shipwreck. Decades later, it resurfaced in a beggar's possession with seventeen unused keys hanging from it. The beggar claimed that a well-dressed stranger had offered an enormous reward for the ring and had correctly named the beggar's location before ever meeting him. The stranger was never found, but sightings of the Curator continue wherever the ring's new owner travels.
