The Tempered Saltshaker

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (saltshaker) Uncommon

This thumb-sized saltshaker is carved from milky blue rock salt and capped with a tarnished copper lid. Seven tiny holes form a crooked smile across its top. A narrow band around the middle bears countless hair-fine tally marks, though the marks rearrange themselves whenever the shaker is used. Its contents never run out, and the salt within glitters with colors that seem to echo the feelings of whoever holds it.

Seasoned by Sentiment When a creature actively preparing or cooking food shakes salt from the Tempered Saltshaker, the salt takes on a flavor reflecting that creature's strongest current emotion. Joy tastes faintly sweet, anger tastes smoky and bitter, sorrow tastes briny and sharp, fear tastes cold and metallic, love tastes warmly spiced, and calm tastes clean and mineral. The effect is purely culinary and does not alter the food's nutritional or magical properties. If the cook is experiencing conflicting emotions, the flavor reflects the emotion that is most prominent to the cook.
A Pinch Is a Record Each distinct use of the saltshaker on food, drink, or an ingredient increases its permanent tally by 1, regardless of how much salt is dispensed. A use means one deliberate shaking motion or pinch taken from the shaker before it is set down. The tally cannot be reduced, erased, or reset by ordinary means. A creature holding the saltshaker can ask it, in any language, 'How many?' The shaker then rattles out the current total in audible clicks, with one click for each use if the total is 100 or fewer, or by stating the number in the holder's mind for larger totals. The tally includes uses made before the item was discovered.
Ledger of the Kitchen Once per day, a creature holding the saltshaker can ask it to identify the last creature that used it and the food or ingredient that creature seasoned, provided that use occurred within the previous 24 hours. The answer arrives as a brief scent and emotional impression rather than a name or spoken sentence. The saltshaker cannot reveal the exact location of the food or identify a creature the holder has never encountered.

Lore

The Tempered Saltshaker is said to have been made by Mera Vell, a famously temperamental halfling chef who claimed that no meal could be honest unless it tasted of the person who prepared it. Her apprentices insist that the shaker learned moods from years of contact with her hands and eventually began recording every seasoning as a tribute to the meals she created.

History

After Mera's death, the saltshaker passed through several kitchens, taverns, and royal feasting halls. A duke once commissioned a scribe to document its tally, but the scribe abandoned the project after discovering that the shaker had been used more than 80,000 times. It was later found in the pantry of a burned roadside inn, still warm and quietly counting.
