The Remembrance Spoon

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (teaspoon) Rare
requires attunement by a creature with an Intelligence of 6 or higher
Charges: 3 (regains at dawn)

This delicate teaspoon is fashioned from dark silver that never tarnishes. Its bowl is etched with a spiral of tiny scenes: a child's first steps, a ship beneath a red moon, a hand releasing a bird, and a door closing in snowfall. A pale amber bead is set into the end of its handle, and the bead seems to contain drifting motes whenever the spoon is near warm liquid. When stirred, the liquid briefly reflects images that are not truly present.

Memory Steeping The spoon has 3 charges and regains all expended charges daily at dawn. As an action, you can stir a cup, bowl, or other small container of liquid for 1 minute while expending 1 charge. Choose one creature within 5 feet of the liquid, including yourself, and name a specific person, place, object, or event. The chosen creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or vividly recall one memory connected to that subject from its own past. The memory is experienced with perfect sensory clarity for up to 1 minute, though it may be incomplete or misleading. An unwilling creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. A willing creature can choose to fail.
A Useful Recollection For 1 hour after a creature experiences a memory through the spoon, it has advantage on one Intelligence (History), Intelligence (Investigation), or Wisdom (Insight) check directly related to that memory. If the memory contains information the creature had consciously forgotten, the information returns for the duration but fades again afterward.
Borrowed Comfort Once per dawn, when you use Memory Steeping on yourself, you can choose to recall a pleasant or reassuring memory instead of making the saving throw. Until the end of your next long rest, you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened and gain 5 temporary hit points.
Quiet Forgetting The spoon's curse is concealed beneath its helpful magic. Each time you expend a charge, you must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or permanently lose a minor personal memory chosen by the DM, such as a familiar song, an ordinary meal, a childhood face, or the details of a peaceful day. The lost memory cannot be restored by the spoon. You do not initially recognize the loss and may interpret the resulting blankness as ordinary forgetfulness. After you fail this saving throw three times, the curse becomes apparent to you.
Curse. The Remembrance Spoon quietly feeds on its attuned wielder's personal history. Each failed Quiet Forgetting saving throw erases a cherished or useful memory. The curse can be ended by remove curse, greater restoration, or similar magic of 5th level or higher, but memories already consumed return only if the DM determines that a separate effect can restore them.

Lore

The spoon was made by Edris Vale, a renowned apothecary who believed that grief could be diluted like bitter tea. Her first experiments allowed mourners to revisit happier moments, and the spoon became celebrated as a gentle tool for comfort and confession. Edris eventually discovered that the magic did not create memories; it moved them. Something was always displaced when a recollection was drawn to the surface.

History

Edris gave the spoon to a widower who used it to remember his late husband each morning. After several months, he could describe his husband's voice perfectly but no longer remembered the man's face. The spoon passed through a succession of therapists, spies, and grieving nobles, each praising its ability to uncover truth while quietly losing pieces of their own lives. It was last seen in the effects of a court physician who had forgotten why she kept a portrait of an unknown child beside her bed.
