The Lich's Last Wager
This pair of twenty-sided dice is carved from yellowed knucklebones, each face polished smooth as old ivory. Hairline cracks glow with a faint violet radiance, and tiny runes in Infernal and Necril circle every number. One die bears a dark iron pip at its center; the other has a single ruby set beneath its highest face. When held, the dice are unnaturally cold, and their numbers seem to shift whenever their owner makes an important decision.
Lore
The dice were carved by the lich Vhalzura the Unfinished from the finger bones of her own former body. Vhalzura believed that chance was merely ignorance given a name, and she sought to eliminate uncertainty from existence. She made the dice to ensure that every wager, battle, and prophecy would end in a result favorable to her grand design. The dice do not obey their bearer. They obey Vhalzura's ambition.
History
Vhalzura lost the dice during the Siege of Hollowglass, when a paladin challenged her to a final game before destroying her phylactery. The paladin used the dice to choose which of three doors concealed the phylactery. The dice selected the correct door, but the chamber beyond contained Vhalzura's waiting soul jar and a prepared trap. The paladin won the wager and shattered the phylactery, yet the lich's final desire was fulfilled: her name became a legend repeated across the world. Since then, the dice have passed from gambler to tyrant to desperate hero, granting each exactly one throw while quietly serving the ambition of their dead creator.
