The Adversarial Whetstone
This palm-sized whetstone is cut from black basalt veined with thin lines of silver. Its surface is unnaturally smooth except for a single hair-fine groove that runs around its circumference like a written sentence. When drawn across steel, it produces no scraping sound; instead, nearby listeners hear a faint whisper arguing against whatever was last said. The silver veins briefly glow red when the stone is used to sharpen words rather than weapons.
Lore
The Adversarial Whetstone was made for court champions who defended nobles with equal skill at swordplay and rhetoric. Its makers believed that every argument had an edge, a point, and a weakness waiting to be found. The stone does not make its wielder wiser; it merely gives confidence and force to a position already chosen, whether that position is noble, foolish, or indefensible.
History
The stone belonged to Magistrate Odran Vey, a celebrated advocate who never lost a public debate and rarely needed to draw his ceremonial rapier. After Vey disappeared during an investigation into a powerful merchant house, the whetstone passed through several hands before being taken from a ruined courtroom. Vey did not die there. He survived as a bitter, influential exile and has recently learned that his whetstone has resurfaced. He wants it back, politely at first, but he has allies, legal authority in several cities, and a long memory for those who refuse him.
