The Third Answer

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (coin) Legendary
requires attunement by a creature capable of making decisions
Charges: 3 (regains at dawn)

The Third Answer is a heavy silver coin with no true faces. One side bears a closed eye surrounded by thirteen tiny doors; the other bears an open mouth filled with blank teeth. Both images seem to shift when viewed directly. Its rim is impossibly narrow and darkened like polished obsidian, yet the coin always balances upon it. A faint line of gold runs around the edge, forming words in a language that changes to match the reader: NOT YET.

Always on the Edge The coin can never land on heads or tails. Whenever it is flipped, tossed, or dropped, it lands upright on its razor-thin edge, regardless of the surface, wind, or magical interference. While you are attuned to the coin, you have advantage on ability checks made to resist being compelled to make a choice by magical means.
Demand the Third The coin has 3 charges and regains all expended charges daily at dawn. As a reaction when you or a creature you can see within 60 feet is presented with two mutually exclusive courses of action, you can expend 1 charge and flip the coin. The coin lands on its edge, and the situation must reveal a third course of action. The third option must be plausible within the current circumstances, must carry a meaningful cost, risk, or complication, and cannot simply combine the original two options or grant an obviously superior outcome. The DM determines the nature of this option. The effect cannot create an object, creature, spell, or circumstance that could not reasonably exist in the scene.
Edge of Probability Once per dawn, when you fail an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can flip the coin as a reaction. You do not reroll the failed result. Instead, the DM introduces a third consequence that is neither the original success nor the original failure, and you suffer that consequence. The third consequence must be significant but cannot kill you outright or permanently remove your character from play.
Unchosen Road Once per long rest, when you would be reduced to 0 hit points, you can remain at 1 hit point instead, provided you immediately accept a third consequence chosen by the DM. Examples include being transported to a dangerous nearby location, losing a treasured nonmagical possession, attracting the attention of a powerful enemy, or gaining a lasting narrative complication. This property cannot be used if you are killed outright by massive damage or an effect that leaves no viable alternative.
The Coin Has an Opinion The coin quietly whispers whenever you face a meaningful binary choice. Its whispers are not audible to other creatures, and they always suggest that neither presented option is acceptable. The coin does not reveal its curse, but it makes the third option feel increasingly necessary.
Curse of Indecision This coin is cursed, although its curse is not revealed by simply identifying its magical properties. While attuned to it, whenever you are required to choose between two mutually exclusive options, you must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to voluntarily choose either option for 1 minute. You can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of your turns, ending the effect on a success. During this time, you can choose or pursue a third option if one is available, but you cannot accept a compromise that merely combines the original choices. If no third option exists, you are incapacitated by hesitation until the effect ends. The curse can be removed only by a remove curse spell cast using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, or by a wish spell.
The Price of Certainty If you willingly make a binary choice without attempting to find or invoke a third option, you have disadvantage on the next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw you make before the end of your next turn. This penalty is part of the curse and is not apparent when the coin is first discovered.
Curse. The coin's powers initially seem to provide ingenious escapes from impossible situations, but its curse gradually makes decisive action feel intolerable. While attuned, the bearer must resist the coin's compulsion whenever faced with a meaningful binary choice. The curse is hidden until triggered or revealed by magic such as identify cast with a successful DC 20 ability check using the caster's spellcasting ability.

Lore

The coin is said to have been minted by the Nameless Auditor, an ancient power that believed every law of reality was merely an opening argument. It was given to kings, prisoners, gods, and executioners, always with the same instruction: never let the world reduce you to two choices. Legends claim that every bearer eventually discovered a third path, but none agreed that the path was worth its price.

History

The coin first appeared in the hand of Queen Merovan during the Siege of Seven Bridges. Rather than surrender or die defending the city, she flipped it and found a third option: she opened the gates to both armies and declared the city neutral ground. The war ended within a day, but the queen vanished through one of the city's gates and was never seen again. Centuries later, the coin has surfaced in the purses of revolutionaries, diplomats, doomed adventurers, and at least one devil who tried unsuccessfully to use it to escape a contract.
