(regains at dawn)
This tiny thimble is fashioned from seamless black metal that is cold even in a furnace. Its surface is polished to a mirror sheen and engraved with concentric rings of impossibly fine silver script. A single pale-blue gemstone is set into its crown, appearing at first to be an ordinary opal but reflecting the viewer's fingertip as an unblemished ivory shape. The thimble never dents, tarnishes, warms, or gathers dirt. When worn, it fits the chosen fingertip with intimate precision, as though it had been made from the wearer's own skin.
Absolutely Armored
When you finish a short or long rest while wearing the thimble, choose one fingertip bearing it. That fingertip, including its nail and the portion of the finger beneath the thimble, is immune to all damage and cannot be severed, crushed, burned, frozen, dissolved, poisoned, petrified, transformed, or moved against your will. No force, spell, or effect can remove the thimble or alter the protected fingertip except a wish spell or divine intervention.
Unyielding Touch
The protected fingertip can safely touch any substance or object, regardless of heat, cold, pressure, sharpness, corrosion, disease, or magical hazard. It can support up to 1,000 pounds without bending or injury, and you have advantage on ability checks and saving throws made to manipulate, inspect, or withstand an object or trap using that fingertip.
Finger Against the World
When the protected fingertip is touching the source of an effect that would damage you, such as a weapon, trap, or hazardous surface, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage you take from that source to 0. You can use this property three times, and you regain all expended uses at dawn.
The Safest Part
The protected fingertip has perfect sensation despite being immune to harm. You always know exactly what it touches, even through darkness, invisibility, or an illusion, although this sense reveals only the physical qualities of the touched object and not its magical properties.
Quiet Possession
The thimble's curse is initially comforting. You cannot willingly remove it, lend it, or permit another creature to remove it. Whenever you can safely use the protected fingertip to test, block, open, or touch a dangerous object, you must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw to choose not to do so. You can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of your turns. On a failure, you must use your next available action or movement to touch the hazard with the protected fingertip, taking the shortest practical route.
A Growing Certainty
Each time Finger Against the World reduces damage to 0, the thimble records that damage within itself. The first two times this occurs, you feel only reassuring warmth. After the third occurrence, you gain one level of exhaustion that cannot be removed while you remain attuned to the thimble. After the fifth occurrence, you gain a second level of exhaustion and your protected fingertip begins to twitch toward nearby hazards. These exhaustion levels and all recorded damage vanish when the curse is removed.
Curse.
The thimble's curse is concealed until it is identified or its compulsion becomes undeniable. The wearer becomes convinced that the protected fingertip is the only truly safe part of the body and is compelled to expose it to danger. The thimble cannot be removed voluntarily. Remove curse suppresses the compulsion for 24 hours but does not end the curse; only a remove curse spell cast using a 7th-level or higher spell slot, a wish spell, or divine intervention permanently removes it.
Lore
The Unbreakable Thimble was said to be made for a royal seamstress who feared neither needle nor flame. She used it to stitch the burial shrouds of kings, test the blades of assassins, and retrieve a crown from a dragon's hoard. Stories claim that she eventually stopped using tools altogether, touching every lock, blade, cauldron, and living creature with the armored finger. Those who knew her said she smiled whenever anything dangerous came near.
History
The thimble was created by the artificer-saint Odran Pell after his daughter lost a finger in a magical loom accident. He sought to make one part of her impossible to harm and succeeded so completely that the protection could not be limited to flesh alone. His daughter survived for decades, but eventually vanished after walking into a burning cathedral with her thimble held out before her. The item has since passed through royal workshops, execution chambers, and the collections of several eccentric wizards.
