The Bell That Comes Before
A palm-sized bell cast from dark, blue-black bronze, with a silver rim polished bright enough to reflect a candle flame. Its surface is engraved with two identical spirals that meet at the lip but never quite touch. A tiny ivory clapper hangs within it, and a narrow strip of red thread is tied around the handle. Though the bell is light enough to carry on a belt, its sound is impossibly clear and seems to come from just behind the listener.
Lore
The bell is known in old prophecy as the First Chime, though no record agrees on what its missing companion is called. Sages claim the pair was made to prove that truth has a shadow: one bell announces what is about to become true, while the other announces what has ceased to be. Those who hear the First Chime often mistake its warning for an omen of danger, but it has rung before weddings, betrayals, falling stars, and the simple opening of an unlocked door.
History
The bell was recovered from a sealed observatory whose clocks had all stopped one minute apart. Its creator, the chronomancer Yseld Vane, vanished while searching for the companion bell. The First Chime passed through the hands of kings, doomsday cults, and at least one notoriously unlucky burglar. Every owner eventually began searching for the missing sibling, and none returned with it. The last known bearer disappeared after the bell rang in an empty room and continued ringing for exactly one minute.
