The Absolute Thimble
A tiny thimble of seamless black adamantine, its surface polished so darkly that it reflects no image. A narrow ring of silver thread circles its rim, woven with microscopic letters that shift whenever the wearer changes hands. Inside, the metal is warm and faintly ridged, fitting any fingertip as though it had been made from the wearer's own nail. No blade, flame, acid, or spell has left a mark upon it.
Lore
The Absolute Thimble is said to embody the first promise ever made by a craftsperson: that one small part of a work would be done perfectly, whatever the cost. Its protection is not resistance, durability, or divine favor. It is a declaration that the chosen fingertip is outside the jurisdiction of harm. Scholars dispute whether this is a blessing, a loophole in reality, or an unfinished sentence in the laws of creation.
History
The thimble was created by Ysabet Vell, an immortal seamstress who stitched a tear in the boundary between worlds. After completing the final stitch, she vanished, leaving the thimble behind. Centuries later, it passed through royal treasuries, thieves' guilds, and the hands of adventurers who used it to test cursed locks, hold collapsing gates, and press fingers against the hearts of dying gods. Every known owner eventually received the same unsigned letter: "I know exactly where it is." The letters are believed to come from Odran Quill, a collector who has never been seen but has recovered every other object from Vell's legendary collection.
