Lantern of Former Shadows
This small brass lantern is blackened with age, its four glass panes tinted the color of old amber. A narrow chimney curls like a question mark above a blue-white flame that produces more shadow than light. Fine engravings around the base depict the same empty room in four different states of decay, while a tarnished silver latch bears the words: "Nothing stays buried where a shadow remembers."
Lore
The lantern is said to have been made by Odran Vell, a magistrate who believed every crime left an echo in the places where it occurred. Its shadows became notorious for exposing false alibis, hidden inheritances, altered battle reports, and respectable families whose foundations were less respectable than their houses. Some call it a tool of justice; others call it an invitation to regret.
History
Odran Vell commissioned the lantern after a nobleman was acquitted of murder through testimony from twelve witnesses. When lit in the supposed scene of the crime, it showed the nobleman standing over the victim exactly as described by the missing thirteenth witness. The nobleman later purchased the lantern, used it to blackmail half the city, and disappeared after taking it into an ancestral crypt. It was recovered a century later beside his undisturbed skeleton, still clutching a list of names whose historical shadows had contradicted him.
