The Honest Umbrella
A compact black umbrella with a silver ferrule shaped like an accusing finger. Its ribs are polished bone-white metal, and its canopy is made from midnight-blue silk that remains perfectly dry even in a storm. Along the inner rim, tiny silver letters spell out uncomfortable truths in dozens of languages. When opened, the fabric briefly reflects the face of whoever holds itโnot as they appear, but as they fear they are seen.
Lore
The Honest Umbrella was made for judges who wished to walk through rain without pretending they were innocent. It does not prevent misfortune, erase guilt, or alter reality for long. It merely grants its bearer a single breath in which consequences hesitate. The umbrella's honesty is considered its true enchantment; many owners have valued the shelter, but nearly all have eventually discarded it after hearing what it had to say.
History
The umbrella was created by Merovan Vell, a royal confessor whose monarch demanded an artifact that could protect him from every consequence of his decisions. Vell succeeded only partially. The umbrella saved the king from an assassination attempt, a failed treaty, and a collapsing balcony, but after each escape it publicly named the king's cowardice, vanity, and negligence. The king ordered it burned. The umbrella reappeared in Vell's possession the following morning, still damp with rain that had not fallen. Since then, it has passed from tyrants to adventurers, always leaving behind a trail of narrowly avoided disasters and brutally accurate confessions.
