The Edgewise Coin

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (coin) Very Rare
requires attunement by a creature capable of making a meaningful choice

This heavy coin is slightly larger than a gold piece and made of dark electrum veined with a thin line of living silver. One face bears a crowned eye, while the other depicts a closed door without a handle. Around its perfectly sharpened rim are tiny engraved words in an unknown language, none of which repeat. The coin is unnaturally balanced; even when placed on a pitching ship's deck or a creature's trembling fingertip, it stands upright and motionless.

Always on the Edge The coin cannot be made to land on either face. Whenever it is flipped, tossed, or dropped onto a reasonably flat surface, it balances perfectly on its edge. Nonmagical attempts to force it onto a face automatically fail.
The Third Option When you are presented with two mutually exclusive courses of action, you can use a bonus action to hold the coin and invoke its power. For the next 10 minutes, you can perceive a third plausible course of action that avoids choosing either presented option, provided such an option could reasonably exist in the situation. The Dungeon Master determines the nature of this option. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the next dawn.
Refusal of Certainty As a reaction when you fail an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can invoke the coin to treat the result as neither a success nor a failure. The immediate consequences of the roll are suspended until the end of your next turn, at which point you must repeat the roll. You must use the new result, even if it is worse. Once this property is used, it cannot be used again until the next dawn.
A Debt Unsettled The coin's former owner can sense its direction and distance while on the same plane of existence, and always knows when you use one of its properties. The owner may communicate with you through brief whispers, reflections, or dreams, urging you to return it. If the coin is willingly given to another creature, it vanishes from the recipient's hand and reappears in the former owner's possession.
The Edge Remembers Once per long rest, you can ask the coin a question concerning a decision, bargain, or conflict in which you are involved. The coin answers with a single word or brief phrase that is truthful but deliberately incomplete. The answer often suggests a third possibility rather than identifying the safest choice.

Lore

The Edgewise Coin is said to have been minted in the interval between two possible histories, when neither outcome of an ancient war had yet become true. Its magic rejects binary fate: heads and tails are merely arguments, while the edge is the answer that no one considered. Philosophers, revolutionaries, and desperate monarchs have all sought it, believing that one more possibility is always preferable to an inevitable choice.

History

The coin was last carried by Ilyra Venn, a notorious negotiator who ended three wars without signing a treaty. According to surviving accounts, Ilyra used the coin to offer every opposing army a third alternative: surrender, victory, or abandoning the battlefield entirely. She disappeared after refusing to choose between two cosmic powers demanding her allegiance. Ilyra's agents now search relentlessly for the coin, claiming that she is alive, imprisoned beyond the world, and wants her property returned. Others believe Ilyra has become something stranger and that reclaiming the coin is only the first step in forcing reality to honor an old bargain.
