The Remembrance Spoon
A delicate teaspoon cast from silver-blue metal that never tarnishes. Its bowl is engraved with tiny scenes of open doors, clasped hands, and faces half-hidden behind veils of steam. A ring of pale amber circles the handle, trapping a glimmer that moves like tea leaves in a current. The spoon's matching mate was clearly broken away from a small notch near the end of the handle, leaving behind a jagged crescent-shaped fitting. When held near a warm drink, the engravings shift subtly into images drawn from the holder's memories.
Lore
The Remembrance Spoon was made for an elven tea house where grieving patrons could share memories of the dead without surrendering them to the passage of time. The paired spoons were said to represent the two halves of remembrance: the memory one keeps and the memory one gives away. Over centuries, the surviving spoon has become known as a comfort to mourners, a tool of interrogation, andโamong poetsโa way to taste a vanished summer.
History
The spoons were forged by Vaelira Senn, a memory-weaver who crafted them for her twin brother, a traveling historian. During a war against a mind-flaying cult, the brother took one spoon into the cult's underground archive and never returned. Vaelira used the surviving spoon to search the memories of refugees and prisoners, eventually locating the cult's hidden library but not her brother. The Remembrance Spoon has since passed through the hands of court historians, grieving monarchs, and thieves who sought to steal secrets from their victims. Its missing sibling has not been seen in generations, though legends claim it is still stirring somewhere beneath the ruins of the old archive.
