The Tempered Shaker
This squat saltshaker is carved from pale rose quartz veined with gray, with a silver cap shaped like a tiny chef's hat. Six pinprick holes form a smiling face on its lid. The shaker is always warm to the touch, and its grains of salt shift in color according to the attuned holder's mood, ranging from golden white to stormy blue, ember red, and soft violet. A narrow band around its middle bears the inscription: "Season honestly, serve generously."
Lore
The shaker is said to have been made by Maela Hearthheart, an innkeeper who believed that no argument could survive a shared meal prepared with sincerity. She enchanted it after discovering that her cooking tasted different whenever she lied about how she felt. The shaker became famous among diplomats, priests, and traveling cooks, who used it to reveal hidden tensions without forcing anyone to speak.
History
For generations, the Tempered Shaker passed from one caretaker to another, each inheriting a small promise to feed someone overlooked by the world. It was last carried by a wandering halfling chef who disappeared while delivering supper to a besieged village. Months later, the shaker was found clean and warm beside an abandoned campfire, waiting for another cook willing to accept its obligation.
