Dragonsong Longsword

โš”๏ธ Weapon (longsword) Rare
requires attunement by a spellcaster
Damage 1d8 slashing
versatile (1d10)
Charges: 7 (regains at dawn)

The Dragonsong Longsword is a blade of gleaming steel, its length etched with spiraling runes that resemble dragon scales. The grip is wrapped in blackened reptilian leather, and the crossguard is shaped like two dragon wings. When drawn, the sword emits a soft, crystalline hum that grows louder as dragons approach, vibrating to a higher pitch with larger dragons. The metal bears a faint iridescent sheen, shifting from steel-gray to a violet hue as the hum intensifies.

Dragon's Resonance The blade hums at a melodious pitch. Its aura subtly shifts with dragon proximity. While a dragon is within 60 feet, the sword gains an extra +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls (in addition to its inherent magical bonus). Within 15 feet, the bonus becomes +2. Within 5 feet, the bonus becomes +3. These bonuses apply to attack and damage rolls with this weapon only and are in addition to any base magical bonus.
Dragon's Deflection The hum can be focused into a defensive shield. When you are targeted by an attack by a dragon within 60 feet, you can use a reaction to spend 1 charge to impose disadvantage on that attack roll.
Dragon's Echo On a hit against a dragon, you may spend 2 charges to attempt to unsettle the dragon's will. The dragon must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 round.

Lore

Forged in the dawn of dragon-sky worship by a guild of dragon-bonded smiths known as the Songsteel, the Dragonsong Longsword was meant to be a diplomat's bladeโ€”unifying mortal and dragonkind through music and steel. It is said that dragons themselves can hear the instrument's song from miles away, and some metallic dragons reward its bearer with rare favors.

History

The blade's first owner was a human bardsman who wandered dragon-haunted peaks. It later passed to a dragon's herald who used the blade to broker uneasy truces between dragon factions and mortal kingdoms. In many battles, the sword's music warned of an approaching dragon and allowed retreat or preparation.
