🧙 NPC

Mara Vey, the Rose Widow

Retired assassin whose flower stall is guarded by the terrifying devotion of a former target

Mara Vey sells roses, lilies, and funeral wreaths from a green-painted cart, trimming every stem with the exactness of a surgeon. She claims to have retired from “unpleasant work,” but her calm eyes still measure exits, witnesses, and the distance to every sharp object. A dangerous lover watches over her, making even old enemies hesitate to reach the flower stall.

Appearance

Mara is a compact woman in her late fifties with silver hair braided down her back and a black mourning veil pinned to her hat, though no one remembers whom she is mourning. Her hands are scarred across the knuckles and stained green from stems; she deadheads roses with a narrow silver knife, removing each spent bloom in one clean motion. Her stall is bright with color, but its counter conceals a garrote, a vial of sleeping draught, and three throwing knives.

Personality & voice

She is courteous, dry, and impossible to rush. Mara speaks in quiet horticultural metaphors, calling suspicious customers “poorly rooted” and imminent violence “a late frost,” while her eyes remain fixed on everyone’s hands. She often pauses to snip a dead flower before answering, then says, “There now. Better to remove a problem while it is small.”

What they want

Mara wants to spend her remaining years keeping her stall and her lover safe from the assassins’ guild she betrayed. She is collecting proof that the guild’s local master ordered an innocent child killed, and she needs the characters to deliver a sealed ledger to a magistrate without revealing that she stole it. In return, she offers rare poisons disguised as perfumes, discreet introductions, or a favor from the person who loves her.

Secret

Mara’s protector is Ilyra Voss, a feared killer known as the Red Saint—and Mara’s former mark. Mara was sent to kill Ilyra, spared her at the final moment, and fell in love with her; Ilyra has since eliminated every assassin who came looking for Mara, leaving their severed guild signets hidden beneath the flower cart. The revelation turns Mara from a suspicious vendor into the one person capable of asking a monster to stand down.

Plot hooks

  • A guild assassin arrives to buy a dozen white roses, and Mara quietly asks the characters to keep the customer talking until Ilyra can reach the stall.
  • The characters discover a bloodstained guild signet beneath the flower cart and must decide whether to expose Mara or help her finish assembling evidence against the guild master.
  • Ilyra’s latest protection kills someone the characters needed alive, forcing them to confront Mara and persuade her lover to stop hunting the people who threaten her.
