Mara Venn, Keeper of Spare Doors

A meticulous locksmith whose private collection can open half the city—and whose one harmless lie never changes

Mara Venn runs a narrow locksmith's shop packed with labeled keys, wax impressions, and tiny drawers that rattle whenever someone enters. She is unfailingly helpful, but her calm certainty becomes unsettling when she insists that she has never made a key for a particular lock.

Appearance

Mara is a compact woman in her fifties with silver-threaded black hair, brass spectacles, and fingertips permanently darkened by oil and graphite. Her leather apron holds picks, files, and a ring of decoy keys, while the walls behind her display hundreds of numbered hooks; the real duplicate keys are hidden in locked drawers beneath the floorboards. She keeps one hand resting on the nearest key whenever she is nervous.

Personality & voice

Mara is patient, observant, and cheerfully intrusive, asking who owns a lock, what it protects, and whether anyone else has a copy. She speaks in precise little measurements—"Two pins high, one ward deep"—and taps a key against her teeth while thinking. Her catchphrase is, "Every lock tells on its owner," delivered as if it were practical advice rather than a warning.

What they want

Mara wants to complete her private index of the city's locks before a rival locksmith, Oren Pell, can steal or destroy it. She hires the characters to retrieve missing key blanks, observe who enters a noble estate, or quietly copy a lock whose owner refuses her services. In return, she can identify most local keys by sight and produce a working duplicate within an hour.

Secret

Mara lies about one small thing every time: she always claims that the brass key hanging beneath her counter opens her own front door. It does not; it opens a sealed room below the shop where she keeps her duplicate keys and records of every lock she has ever cut. She created the lie after discovering that a former customer used one of her copies in a murder, and she now hides evidence that could expose several respected citizens—including a magistrate who has threatened her family.

Plot hooks

  • A key found beside a murdered magistrate matches Mara's workmanship, and she insists she has never seen it—while secretly begging the characters to find the missing duplicate.
  • Oren Pell steals Mara's index and begins selling access to the city's locks; Mara hires the characters to recover it before he reaches the sealed room beneath her shop.
  • A grateful noble asks the characters to escort Mara to a supposedly secure vault, unaware that her private duplicate key can open it and that she has a personal reason to enter.
