Merrit Vane, Last of the Bright Company

Washed-up adventurer, living legend, and beloved of the monster beneath the old road

Merrit Vane sits in the corner of the Crooked Tankard with a chipped tankard, a retired sword, and a story for every scar. They speak of the present as though it already happened, turning spilled ale, unpaid debts, and sudden danger into chapters of an epic saga. Most troublemakers leave Merrit aloneโ€”not from respect, but because something dreadful has made it clear that Merrit is theirs.

Appearance

Merrit is a lean, weather-beaten human in their late fifties, with one clouded eye, a silver-streaked braid, and a dented breastplate worn over an innkeeper's apron. Their sword hangs above the bar, too polished to be truly retired, while a black iron ring shaped like a thorn circles one finger. Merrit always seems to be drying the same blue scarf, even when it is perfectly dry.

Personality & voice

Merrit narrates everything in past tense, including direct requests: "And then Merrit asked the fine wizard to stop setting fire to the curtains." They speak with grand, mournful certainty, punctuating mundane events with phrases such as "Thus began the third disaster" and "The saga remembered no apology." When frightened, they become quieter and more precise, and they never say the name of the thing they love.

What they want

Merrit wants the party to recover a silver reliquary stolen from the ruins of their old adventuring company's final expedition. They insist it contains only ashes and a fragment of a banner, but they need it returned to the chapel beneath the old road before the next new moon. Merrit offers their maps, contacts, and last remaining treasureโ€”and will eventually admit that the reliquary is the only thing keeping their beloved from coming to collect them.

Secret

The dangerous figure protecting Merrit is Vhalzura, an ancient shadow dragon whom Merrit once spared as a wounded wyrmling. Decades later, Vhalzura considers Merrit its mate and has quietly destroyed anyone who seriously threatened them, including two members of Merrit's old company. Merrit is not merely protected by the dragon; they have been sending Vhalzura letters for years, begging it to stop killing in their name, with no success.

Plot hooks

  • A local gang threatens Merrit over a gambling debt, and the party must decide whether to intervene before black smoke begins gathering over the town.
  • Merrit's stolen reliquary is being auctioned by a noble collector who refuses to surrender it, unaware that Vhalzura is already circling the estate.
  • The party discovers that one of Merrit's supposedly dead companions survived and claims Merrit betrayed the company to save Vhalzura; both versions of the saga cannot be true.
