Mara Vell, Keeper of the Shuttered Stacks

A sleepless librarian who lies about the one book she never read

Mara Vell maintains the town library with meticulous care, though every lamp burns through the night and the windows are barred from within. She has read the forbidden books hidden beneath the archive, and now she listens for something turning pages in the dark.

Appearance

Mara is a narrow, gray-haired woman in ink-stained gloves, wire spectacles, and a blue shawl pinned with a brass key. She carries a ring of labeled keys and keeps a hooded lantern burning at her belt even in daylight. Her desk drawer contains six stubby candles, all recently used.

Personality & voice

She is precise, courteous, and visibly tired, answering questions while checking the room's corners and counting the exits. Speak in a low whisper that occasionally snaps into a librarian's stern reprimand; her usual warning is, "Quiet, please. It hears enthusiasm." Mara always lies about the same small thing: she insists she drinks chamomile tea, though the cup in her hand always contains strong black coffee.

What they want

Mara wants the party to recover a stolen page from the library's sealed undercroft before sunset, when she believes the text can begin reading itself aloud. She will offer access to restricted maps, old warrants, and local secrets in exchange for the page, but refuses to let anyone accompany her into the stacks after dark.

Secret

Mara did not merely read the forbidden books; she read one aloud to learn whether its warnings were true. The voice that answered now lives in the library's catalog, rearranging titles to spell messages and occasionally speaking through anyone who reads a listed book aloud. Mara's fixed lie about drinking chamomile is a harmless ritual she uses to test whether the voice has learned to imitate her.

Plot hooks

  • Every book in the library is found facing backward on its shelf, except one that has been left open to the party's names.
  • Mara hires the characters to retrieve a missing page, but the thief claims the page begged them to take it.
  • A child vanishes inside the library after closing, and Mara admits the building has gained a room she cannot find on any map.
