The Remembrance Baths
A steaming bathhouse where the water remembers every body, confession, and betrayal ever given to it
Warm mist rolls through tiled halls while copper pipes murmur like distant voices. Every pool reflects more than its current occupants: a hand reaching for a stolen key, a lover weeping behind a locked door, a corpse sinking beneath silver water. The regulars observe one unwritten rule: never ask the bath what it remembers unless you are prepared to be remembered in return.
Atmosphere
The air tastes of mineral salts, lavender, and old pennies; bare feet slap against blue mosaic tile beneath the constant hush of running water. Steam beads on bronze statues and gathers in the rafters, where whispered conversations sometimes echo in voices belonging to people long dead. Attendants move quietly between curtained alcoves, lowering their eyes whenever a pool begins to ripple without anyone touching it.
Notable features
The central Memory Pool is fed by seven brass spouts, each engraved with a different emotion, and its surface shows brief images when disturbed by a hand or dropped object. A locked archive of clay tablets records the names of patrons whose memories have become dangerous; the bathhouse keeper carries the only key. Beneath the cold plunge is a drain large enough for a Small creature, leading to the original spring, where lost jewelry and older, stranger things collect.
Who you'll meet
Mara Vell, the courteous keeper, knows the unwritten rule and will quietly offer towels, bribes, or warnings to anyone who breaks it. Brother Caldus, a disgraced priest, soaks alone while trying to find proof that his god's last vision was stolen from the water. Nessa-of-the-Reeds, a teenage attendant, has learned to recognize memories that belong to shapeshifters and sells that knowledge only to people she trusts.
Secrets & dangers
The water remembers intent as well as action, so a character planning violence may see the attack before it happensโand alert the victim if they stare too long. The oldest pool contains a memory of the bathhouse's founding murder; disturbing it releases a spectral bather who attempts to reenact the crime using the nearest guests. Anyone who openly asks the water a question leaves behind a clear, permanent memory of themselves, which the staff can later replay for enemies, blackmailers, or the dead.
Plot hooks
- A noble hires the party to recover a memory showing who poisoned her, but the image also reveals one character committing an unrelated future crime.
- A regular vanishes from a locked bathing room, leaving only a wet footprint trail that leads into the original spring.
- The bathhouse's water begins showing the same unknown warrior drowning in every pool, and Mara begs the party to discover whether the vision is a warning or an invitation.
