The Four-Way Rest

A crossroads inn where every traveler brings a different road—and something below dreams of opening one more

The Four-Way Rest squats beneath a leaning signpost at a crossroads of four muddy roads, though each guest swears they arrived by a route no one else can find. Its hearth burns without fuel, its floorboards thrum faintly after midnight, and the cellar door is always warm to the touch. The innkeeper insists the building is ordinary; the deep, slow breathing beneath it suggests otherwise.

Atmosphere

Rain ticks against warped shutters while wagon wheels groan somewhere beyond the walls, even when the roads outside are empty. The air smells of rosemary stew, wet wool, and cold stone; every room carries a faint vibration like a distant snore. At night, guests hear footsteps crossing the roof, followed by a single muffled knock from beneath the cellar floor.

Notable features

A massive common-room map is pinned with colored nails, but each nail marks a road visible only to the traveler who placed it; touching one briefly reveals that road underfoot. Four doors in the cellar open onto short passages ending in packed earth, and a fifth door—bricked over from the inside—radiates heat. The inn's iron bell can be rung from any room, but each ring makes one sleeping guest whisper a name they do not recognize.

Who you'll meet

Mara Venn, the calm innkeeper, records every guest's arrival road and quietly pays adventurers to investigate anyone who claims to have come from the same route as another guest. Brother Caldus, a sleepless pilgrim, carries a silver chisel and believes the inn is built over a buried saint whose dreams reshape geography. Sella Reed, a cheerful courier, has been trapped here for three weeks because every road she takes returns her to the front door.

Secrets & dangers

The inn stands atop a sealed subterranean crossroads occupied by an ancient road-spirit, dormant since the roads were first named; each guest's unique arrival feeds it memories of distant places. If the bricked door is opened, the sleepers below begin turning in their dreams, causing rooms to connect to hostile locations for a few minutes at a time. Careless explorers may wake the spirit by removing the iron milestone beneath the cellar, while clever characters can lull it again by restoring four stolen road markers to their proper directions.

Plot hooks

  • Two guests suddenly claim to have arrived from the same road, and both remember the party as travelers who died years ago.
  • A road appears on the common-room map leading to a missing village, and following it reveals that the village is trapped inside the inn's sleeping foundations.
  • Mara Venn asks the party to descend beneath the cellar and recover a stolen road marker before the dreaming spirit wakes and rearranges the region.
