The Foretelling Graveyard
A cemetery where tomorrow’s dead sometimes receive yesterday’s stone
Wind combs through black grass and rusted ironwork while grave markers scratch names into themselves beneath a smell of wet earth and candle smoke. Most stones record the dead accurately—but a few announce deaths days early, and one sealed door beneath the oldest mausoleum has never opened in living memory.
Atmosphere
The graveyard lies in a shallow bowl where fog gathers even under a clear sky. Names and dates rasp across headstones like a quill dragged over slate, accompanied by distant bell chimes that have no visible bell; the air smells of rain, cold ash, and freshly turned soil. Visitors quickly notice that every sound seems delayed by a heartbeat, including their own footsteps.
Notable features
A crooked path leads between self-inscribing headstones, whose letters can be scraped away but reappear by dawn. At the center stands the mausoleum of Saint Orra, with a smooth iron door set into its floor; it bears no lock, hinges, or handle, only a hand-sized depression shaped like an open eye. Nearby, a mortuary bell hangs from a dead yew, and ringing it causes every grave marker to display its current inscription at once.
Who you'll meet
Mara Venn, the cemetery keeper, carries a bucket of whitewash and secretly paints over stones that predict living townsfolk; she begs the party to ignore one bearing her own name. Brother Caldus, a priest who records every inscription, believes the stones are warnings from a benevolent oracle but has begun omitting names from his ledger. Nib, a grave-robbing goblin hiding in a crypt, steals newly written dates and sells them as death omens.
Secrets & dangers
The stones do not predict death—they record the moment a person becomes certain they will die, which can be triggered by a vision, curse, or deliberate deception. The sealed mausoleum door opens only when someone speaks a true name that has never appeared on a headstone; beyond it waits a chamber containing an unfinished grave and a stone that updates whenever the party makes a life-changing choice. Careless tampering causes nearby corpses to rise as confused mourners, attacking anyone whose name has appeared prematurely.

- Mara Venn hires the characters to find whoever is adding false names to the stones before the town panics and begins killing the predicted victims.
- The sealed door suddenly opens after a stranger whispers one adventurer’s true name, revealing a grave prepared for someone who has not yet been born.
