The Inland Beacon

A sea-lighthouse that shines for something beneath the earth

A white stone lighthouse rises from a wheat field a mile from the nearest coast, its lantern turning slowly beneath a greenish flame. The locals call it necessary and refuse to explain why; every few years, the tower is found somewhere else, leaving behind a perfect circle of salt and flattened grass.

Atmosphere

Wind moans through the tower's narrow windows, carrying brine, tar, and the cry of distant gulls despite the dry farmland surrounding it. At night, the beam sweeps across fields, roads, and graveyards, and anyone caught in it hears waves breaking directly behind them. The villagers lower their voices near the lighthouse and keep every window shuttered after sunset.

Notable features

A spiral stair climbs around a hollow central shaft, with iron handrails cold enough to numb bare fingers. The lantern room contains a brass lens etched with unfamiliar coastlines; touching one makes the visitor briefly feel the deck of a pitching ship beneath their feet. Beneath the keeper's quarters, a locked trapdoor bears a ship's wheel instead of a keyhole, while the tower's foundation is surrounded by a circle of salt that cannot be swept away.

Who you'll meet

Mara Venn, the exhausted keeper, records the tower's position every dawn and begs visitors never to watch it continuously; she secretly wants help proving where it goes. Old Hobb, a farmer whose field has hosted the lighthouse twice, sells blackened ears of corn and insists the tower keeps the dead from finding the village. Sister Caldris, a traveling priest, has come to dismantle the beacon, believing its light is guiding an approaching ghost fleet.

Secrets & dangers

The lighthouse moves only when no living creature observes it, slipping through space sometime between two heartbeats; creatures that try to keep watch suffer visions of drowning and may awaken miles away. The trapdoor opens when a wheel-shaped object is turned inside its lock, revealing stairs descending into seawater and a bell whose ringing summons something from below. The beacon is not warning ships away: it is marking the village as a safe harbor for a drowned power that returns whenever the light goes dark.

Plot hooks

  • The lighthouse vanishes overnight, and the party must follow a trail of wet footprints through the fields before the beacon reappears somewhere far more dangerous.
  • Mara Venn discovers that one of the etched coastlines matches a map found in a sealed tomb, and asks the party to investigate the connection before the next movement.
  • The lantern goes dark during a stormless night, and villagers begin hearing knocks from inside their wells as something searches for the lighthouse.
