Merrit Rind, Last Witness
A flagrantly obvious cheese merchant-spy who survived the erasure of an entire place
Merrit Rind arrives with a handcart of sweating cheeses, a waxed mustache, and enough concealed spy equipment to outfit a small rebellion. Everyone knows Merrit is a spy; Merrit cheerfully confirms it, then insists the real mystery is why no one remembers the vanished town of Bellwether. Merrit alone recalls its streets, its people, and the thing that made the place disappear.
Appearance
Merrit is a broad, pink-faced halfling in a yellow coat stained with brine, pushing a cart labeled THE TOTALLY LEGITIMATE CHEESE BUSINESS. Spyglass lenses hang from both ears, coded messages are tucked visibly into the cheesecloth, and a dagger hilt protrudes from each boot. Their left hand is covered in white scars shaped like tiny doorways, which become warm whenever Merrit speaks of Bellwether.
Personality & voice
Merrit is sunny, theatrical, and incapable of subtlety: they announce surveillance attempts, loudly ask whether anyone is working for the Crown, and leave conversations by saying, "You saw nothing, and if you did, it was cheese-related." They refer to people by cheese names until they learn the real ones, tap three times on any table before sharing information, and treat every interrogation as a trade negotiation. Beneath the performance, they are exhausted by being the only person who remembers a whole community.
What they want
Merrit wants the characters to escort them to the site of Bellwether, a village that vanished from maps, memories, and the land itself three years ago. They believe one surviving object—a black iron town bell now hidden in a noble's collection—can restore Bellwether long enough to rescue whoever may still be trapped there. Merrit offers rare cheeses, forged travel papers, and access to an active spy network in exchange for help stealing the bell.
Secret
Merrit did not merely witness Bellwether's disappearance; they caused it. As an undercover agent, they rang the black bell to signal an evacuation during a raid, not knowing the bell was an ancient seal that erased the town to imprison something beneath it. Merrit survived because they were outside the boundary delivering contraband cheese, and they have spent every day since inventing increasingly obvious spy work to keep powerful people interested in them instead of investigating the truth.
Plot hooks
- Merrit hires the characters to steal the black iron bell from a duke's gallery, where its inscription has begun appearing on the walls at night.
- A traveler recognizes one of Merrit's vanished townsfolk in a crowded market, but the person insists Bellwether never existed and begs the characters not to follow them.
- The characters discover that every cheese in Merrit's cart bears a tiny map of Bellwether, and one wheel has begun whispering directions toward the place that no longer exists.
