Mara Vell, the Rose Widow
Retired assassin whose flower stall is guarded by the terrifying devotion of a former target
Mara Vell tends a bright flower cart beneath a faded red umbrella, snipping dead blooms with the same calm precision she once used to open throats. She is unfailingly polite, remembers every customer’s favorite flower, and never seems surprised by danger. Those who threaten her soon discover that someone far more frightening than Mara has taken an interest in her safety.
Appearance
Mara is a lean, silver-haired woman in her late sixties, with scarred knuckles, cloud-gray eyes, and a green apron perpetually stained with soil. Her stall overflows with roses, lavender, marigolds, and one black orchid she refuses to sell. She deadheads roses using a tiny silver knife, removing each spent bloom at exactly the same angle; the blade is spotless except for a dark notch near its tip.
Personality & voice
Mara is gentle, observant, and impossible to hurry. She speaks in quiet, practical sentences and calls everyone "dear heart," including people she suspects of murder. While talking, she trims leaves, counts coins without looking down, and occasionally pauses to study a visitor’s hands. Her catchphrase is, "Everything living tells you where to cut."
What they want
Mara wants to keep her stall and the adjoining community garden safe through the upcoming Founders’ Festival, when a local gang plans to extort every market vendor. She refuses to flee or hire guards; instead, she asks the characters to identify the gang’s organizer and bring proof to her before festival morning. If they succeed, Mara will quietly arrange for the gang to abandon the market without bloodshed.
Secret
Mara’s most famous assassination was the attempted killing of Lord Cassian Vale, a tyrant’s son whose household she infiltrated twelve years ago. She spared him after discovering that he was secretly dismantling his father’s regime, and the two fell in love; Cassian now rules a distant city under an assumed name and sends protection whenever Mara is threatened. The “flower wholesaler” who watches her stall is one of his elite killers, and Cassian’s devotion—not Mara’s retirement—is the real reason no one has successfully harmed her.

- The characters are hired to assassinate Lord Cassian Vale, only to discover that Mara is the one person who can get them close enough to him—and may offer them a better target.
- Mara’s protective wholesaler vanishes after leaving a single thornless rose on the counter, forcing the characters to defend the flower stall from killers who know exactly what Mara used to be.
