The Four-Way Lantern
A crossroads inn where every guest arrives by a different road—and no one asks where the fifth door leads
The Four-Way Lantern stands beneath a leaning sign at a crossroads that seems ordinary until travelers compare maps: no two guests have ever approached by the same road. Inside, the fire burns blue at midnight, the floorboards creak in unfamiliar patterns, and every regular knows the unwritten rule: never leave by the road you entered on.
Atmosphere
Rain taps the leaded windows even beneath a clear sky, while the air smells of wet leather, woodsmoke, and cinnamon stew. Lanternlight pools in four colors across the common room, and the front door opens onto a different landscape for each visitor—pine forest, salt marsh, desert track, or snowbound moor. The innkeeper rings a brass bell whenever someone arrives, though nobody remembers hearing it from outside.
Notable features
Four road-facing doors line the common room, each marked only by a brass nail and a different scratch pattern; touching a nail causes that door's view to shift. A huge guestbook is chained to the bar, with every entry written in the guest's own handwriting—even entries not yet made. Beneath the hearth lies a trapdoor sealed by seven mismatched keys, while the upstairs hallway has one more bedroom door than the inn has rooms.
Who you'll meet
Mara Venn, the one-eyed innkeeper, collects guests' abandoned maps and will trade information for a truthful answer about a road's destination. Brother Caldus, a cheerful pilgrim who has stayed for forty-three years, quietly warns newcomers never to follow a departing guest. Sella Quickstep, a courier with no shadow, is desperate to find the road that leads home and offers the party a stolen brass nail as payment for help.
Secrets & dangers
The unwritten rule is simple: never leave by the road you entered on; doing so returns a traveler to the inn, but removes one cherished memory each time. The guestbook records the names of people who will arrive tomorrow, and crossing out a name makes that person vanish from every road except the inn's. After midnight, the extra bedroom opens onto a silent crossroads where a tall, faceless host waits to collect the inn's oldest unpaid debt.
Plot hooks
- A missing noble has been seen in the guestbook three times under three different names, and the party must find which road carried away the real person.
- Sella Quickstep begs the characters to escort her through the extra bedroom door before the faceless host notices she has stolen a brass nail.
- A party member leaves by the road they entered on and loses the memory of a vital quest clue; the inn's regulars know where that memory is being kept.
