The Remembering Orchard

Every tree bears a dead planter’s favorite fruit—and roots curl around something that must not wake

Rows of ancient trees crowd a sunken valley, their leaves whispering in voices that vanish when you listen closely. The air smells of ripe fruit, damp soil, and a faint mineral tang, while every branch offers a different harvest: pears, figs, plums, ghost-white peaches, or fruits no living farmer recognizes. Beneath the orchard, something immense sleeps beneath the roots, dreaming through the trees.

Atmosphere

Warm sunlight falls on the orchard even beneath a cloudy sky, but the shadows point in different directions. Bees hum recognizable fragments of lullabies, and fallen fruit bursts with the scent of a planter’s childhood home when crushed. At night, the trees creak as if shifting in bed; every so often, the ground gives a slow, gentle pulse.

Notable features

A moss-covered sign at the entrance lists tree names rather than fruit varieties; touching a name causes the corresponding tree to shed one perfectly ripe piece of fruit. The oldest tree, called Grandmother’s Table, has a hollow trunk large enough to enter and a ladder of living roots descending into darkness. Along the orchard’s center runs a dry irrigation channel lined with silver coins, each stamped with the face of someone who planted a tree.

Who you'll meet

Mara Vell, a retired midwife, gathers fruit for grieving families and insists one tree has begun growing her dead daughter’s favorite food. The mute groundskeeper, Pell, communicates by arranging fallen apples into warnings and secretly removes roots that creep toward the surface. A young noble named Orsin has come to claim a peach tree planted by his ancestor, but the tree bears fruit only when he tells the truth.

Secrets & dangers

Each tree’s roots feed a slumbering earthbound entity called the Orchard Below, which remembers every planter and can speak through their fruit. Eating a tree’s fruit gives a vivid memory of its planter, but eating three from different trees lets the sleeper notice the eater and marks them with a faint root-shaped bruise. If the central irrigation channel is filled with fresh blood, the orchard awakens defensively: roots seize intruders while the buried entity begins to dream of walking.

Plot hooks

  • A tree begins bearing the favorite fruit of a living character, despite nobody remembering them planting it.
  • Pell begs the party to find and destroy a silver coin hidden beneath Grandmother’s Table before the sleeper wakes during the next harvest moon.
  • A grieving village has been eating memory-laden fruit to speak with its dead, but the voices now demand that someone be buried beneath the orchard.
