Marta Vell, Licensed Cheese Merchant
An outrageously obvious spy whose cheese cart carries the last memories of a vanished town
Marta Vell arrives beneath a striped awning, wearing three disguises at once: false mustache, tinted spectacles, and a hat labeled SPY in fading red paint. She sells excellent cheese, asks suspiciously precise questions, and has survived every attempt to silence her because nobody can agree whether she is a fool, a genius, or already dead. Marta is the last living person who remembers Bellwether, a place erased from every map and nearly every mind.
Appearance
Marta is a broad-shouldered woman in her sixties with silver braids, a waxed mustache glued above her lip, and a travel coat lined with pockets. Her handcart displays wheels of blue-veined cheese stamped with tiny maps; one wheel bears the name BELLWETHER beneath layers of wax. She carries a magnifying glass, a coded notebook, and a bright red umbrella even indoors, insisting that all three are essential spy equipment.
Personality & voice
Marta speaks loudly enough for nearby guards to hear and narrates her own suspicious behavior: "Observe, if you dare, as I conceal this document in the cheese." She addresses everyone as "Agent" until they prove they are not listening, then calls them "civilian." Between jokes, she becomes abruptly still and precise, naming dates, smells, and minor details no ordinary witness could retain. She fights like a commoner, but has escaped assassins by throwing cheese, ringing bells, and loudly accusing the attackers of being terrible spies.
What they want
Marta wants the party to carry a wheel of Bellwether cheese to three surviving landmarks and repeat its recipe aloud at each one. She believes this will make the lost town reappear long enough for her to retrieve the town bell, whose clapper contains the names of everyone who vanished. She offers rare cheese, smuggled information, and a surprisingly accurate map of local enemies in exchange for protection on the journey.
Secret
Marta was not merely Bellwether's merchant; she was the agent who betrayed its location to a royal intelligence service in exchange for protection during a war. The service erased Bellwether to hide the mistake, and the same ritual made everyone who lived there forget it. Marta survived because she ate cheese cured with a local salt that resisted the erasure, but each year she loses one personal memory in return. When the truth emerges, her ridiculous spy act becomes a deliberate penance: she wants everyone to notice her before the world can forget Bellwether again.
Plot hooks
- Marta is arrested in the party's presence for espionage, but the arresting soldiers cannot remember what country they serve or why Bellwether appears on their orders.
- A rival cheese merchant offers the party a fortune to steal Marta's map, claiming it leads to an abandoned treasury; in fact, the map is slowly changing to show places that have begun disappearing.
- Marta recognizes one of the characters as a resident of Bellwether, despite the character having no memory of the town, and begs them to help recover the bell before her final memory vanishes.
