The Four-Way Rest

A welcoming crossroads inn built over something that dreams in footsteps

The Four-Way Rest stands beneath a weather-blackened sign showing four roads, though no traveler can agree which direction they came from. Its common room smells of hearth smoke, wet wool, and cinnamon, while floorboards creak in rhythms that resemble distant marching. Every guest arrives by a different roadโ€”and something deep below listens whenever the inn falls quiet.

Atmosphere

Rain ticks against the shutters, mugs clatter, and a fiddle plays a tune that seems to change whenever someone turns away. The inn is warm and crowded, but the air carries a faint scent of turned earth from beneath the floorboards. At night, guests hear footsteps passing under their beds, always traveling toward the cellar and never returning.

Notable features

Four front doors open onto four different roads, but only one can be used at a time; opening a second causes the first to reveal a blank stone wall. A brass-and-ivory map behind the bar shifts its roads whenever a traveler touches it, and a tiny carved figure appears for every guest currently sleeping upstairs. The cellar contains a chained trapdoor whose iron has been warm to the touch for generations; scratches beneath it form the same spiral symbol found on the inn's oldest beams.

Who you'll meet

Mara Venn, the innkeeper, remembers every guest's name but not their face, and quietly begs adventurers never to open the cellar trapdoor. Old Pell, a one-eyed coachman who has been waiting by the hearth for twelve years, claims his road ended beneath the inn and offers directions in exchange for a bottle of red liquor. Sister Odrin, a pilgrim sleeping in the stable, believes the inn is a holy refuge and has begun copying the spiral symbol onto her skin.

Secrets & dangers

The inn was built over a slumbering road-spirit that once swallowed travelers and added their paths to its dream; the four doors are its breathing holes. If the trapdoor is opened, the cellar stretches into a moonlit crossroads where forgotten guests wander, and each character sees a road leading to something they regret abandoning. Careless noise, spilled blood, or breaking the brass map can wake the spirit enough to rearrange the inn, separating the party behind doors that open onto hostile destinations.

Plot hooks

  • A guest vanishes between the common room and the stairs, leaving only muddy footprints that descend through the locked cellar door.
  • The brass map grows a fifth road overnight, leading toward a village the characters know was destroyed decades ago.
  • Mara offers the party free lodging if they can recover the inn's first guest, whose voice has begun calling from beneath the floorboards.
