The Unblinking Baths

A steaming bathhouse whose waters remember every body, secret, and betrayal ever surrendered to them

Warm mist rolls through tiled halls scented with cedar oil, mineral steam, and something faintly metallic. The baths are quiet except for dripping water and the occasional splash from an empty pool; attendants insist nothing is wrong, but every guest eventually sees a reflection that does not belong to the present.

Atmosphere

Blue lanterns glow beneath the waterline, casting wavering shadows across cracked white tile. The air tastes of salt and pennies, and voices seem muffled as though heard from underwater. When everyone in a room looks away—even for a blink—the pools shift several inches, leaving wet trails across the floor.

Notable features

The central Memory Pool is fed by three brass lion-head spouts; touching its surface while naming a person causes a brief image of that person's bathhouse visit to appear. A locked cedar cabinet holds labeled vials of mineral water, each collected from a memorable incident, and can be opened with the proprietor's iron comb. Beneath the oldest pool is a drain large enough for a Small creature, its grate warm to the touch and always found facing a different direction after nobody watches it.

Who you'll meet

Mara Vell, the polite proprietor, records every visitor's name but refuses to enter the water herself; she wants someone to discover why her missing sister appears in the pools. Tovin, a teenage towel attendant, has learned to keep one eye on every reflection and secretly sells glimpses of guests' pasts. Sister Caldris, a traveling healer, bathes in armor and claims the water is repeating a murder that has not happened yet.

Secrets & dangers

The bathhouse remembers emotions more clearly than facts, and a character who stares too long may be overwhelmed by another guest's fear, rage, or grief, suffering vivid hallucinations until removed from the steam. The pools move toward buried objects connected to their memories, sometimes opening cracks or trapping careless bathers behind newly shifted walls. In the sealed cistern below, the water has formed a collective memory of every death witnessed here; it can answer one question truthfully, but first demands that someone reenact the death it recalls.

Plot hooks

  • A murdered noble's final memory appears in the pool, showing one of the characters standing beside the body despite their claim of never meeting the victim.
  • The bathhouse shifts overnight and blocks the city aqueduct, while Mara begs the characters to find the buried object the water is trying to reach.
  • Sister Caldris asks the party to prevent a future murder shown in the Memory Pool, but each attempt to change the scene causes the water to reveal a different killer.
