Lore & Description
Appearance
A colossal leviathan lies in slumber beneath the radiant capital, its massive body curled around the foundations like a sleeping cathedral. Its scales shimmer like wet obsidian, etched with pale runes that glow with holy light whenever the city prays. The beast's presence is felt through the city below: water veins pulse as if the city's heartbeat; the wards above trap its breath, and the surface quivers with every dream that flows from its abyssal mind. When it dreams, the sea itself seems to rise, and walls of water shimmer above the skyline as if the deep is breathing. If awakened, the leviathan's tidal wrath could flood the capital and drown the mightiest temple, but its slumber also keeps some ancient danger at bay—the price of immortality for the city’s safety.
Behavior & Origins
Centuries ago, a creature from the deepest trench rose as protector and destroyer of a holy city. The priests bound it with a pact woven of prayers, iron, and a river of blessed water, sealing its maw beneath the foundation. The city sits atop a cavernous seabed where water runs like arteries; the leviathan sleeps within that seabed, its breath cooling the heat of the holy city’s suns. Now, rumors tell of sacrilege that wakes the leviathan’s anger: if the city loses faith, the wards begin to crack and the great beast will rise, bringing a flood that could rewrite history. The players may be asked to keep the leviathan sleeping, or to awaken it to protect the city from a greater threat, but they must weigh the cost: a sleeping god is not easily awakened, and the price of failing will be the death of many, if not all, of the city’s citizens.
