"It knew my mother's recipe. Then it asked why she screamed." โ Tamsin Vale, survivor of the Greenwake Orchard
Lore & Description
Appearance
This enormous compost heap moves as though a buried animal were crawling beneath it. Layers of black soil, gray eggshell, orange peel, bones, wilted flowers, and pale fungal threads slide over one another in slow, wet pulses. Steam rises from its warm center, carrying impossible smells: cinnamon, blood, rain-soaked hay, birthday candles, and the sharp green scent of a freshly bitten apple. Two amber lights sometimes open in the mass, but they are not eyes; they are memories of firelight reflected from something long consumed.
Behavior & Origins
A Remnant of the Last Meal forms when a compost pit receives food from a place of intense emotion, such as a feast after a betrayal, a battlefield cookfire, or a household where grief has lingered for generations. It remembers every mouthful in fragments and mistakes recognition for affection. The heap may repeat a dead person's final toast, imitate the sound of a child laughing, or beg not to be thrown away. The most notorious specimen is called Mother's Supper and lurks beneath the abandoned Greenwake Orchard, where it wants someone to identify the plum tart that was buried with a murdered noble family.
Running Remnant of the Last Meal
Tactics
The heap opens with Compost Cough if it can catch several creatures, then advances on the nearest target with its long, sagging slams. It uses Memory Spill to provide vivid clues to the most perceptive or curious character, while trying to keep uninitiated attackers between itself and anyone who has understood its memories. When bloodied, it becomes frantic and uses its remaining memories to distract, plead, or imitate loved ones; it fights to the death if someone is close to naming its most painful meal, but otherwise flees into a compost pit or tangled undergrowth.
DM Tips
- Before combat, describe recognizable scraps emerging from the heap and let it repeat a phrase or smell connected to a nearby tragedy; make the resistance feel like a mystery rather than a surprise punishment.
- Give players concrete sensory clues after successful attacks, such as cinnamon frosting on a claw mark or seawater dripping from a wound, and accept plausible explanations as successful Nature or Insight checks.
- Use the heap's voice as a chorus of half-remembered diners: it may suddenly speak in a child's voice, a cook's voice, or the voice of someone one character has lost.
- For a weaker party, reduce its hit points to 45 and make The Meal Remembers a DC 12 check; for a stronger party, give it three Rotting Slam attacks with Multiattack and increase the check DC to 15.
Loot
- The Unspoiled Seed — A black seed found at the heap's warm core, always dry and faintly scented with the meal the creature most longs to remember. Planted in fertile soil, it grows into a plant bearing one strange fruit tied to the heap's history.
- Memory-Soaked Relic — A small object from one of the heap's remembered meals, such as a signet ring, child's spoon, or wedding-cake topper. Identifying its owner can resolve an old local mystery.
