You can have the life you deserved. All you have to do is leave this one behind. โ Mercy's Mirror
Lore & Description
Appearance
This creature appears to be an ordinary puddle, no more than three inches deep, though its edges creep subtly against the ground like spilled mercury. Its surface reflects a vivid, impossible world: dead loved ones smiling beneath warm sunlight, ruined homes restored, scars erased, and long-lost chances made real. The water is black at its edges and silver-blue at its center, with thin rainbow sheens that move against the wind. When it attacks, the puddle rises into translucent hands and faces made from the reflection of its victim.
Behavior & Origins
Better-world puddles form where intense regret, drowning, and unfulfilled wishes overlap. They are not naturally born evil, but each one has learned that hope makes an excellent hook. The puddle understands the desires of creatures who look into it and offers bargains that are genuinely fair in wording, though almost always devastating in consequence. The puddle called Mercy's Mirror lies beneath the collapsed chapel of Saint Orra and wants to collect the names of everyone who has ever wished their life were different.
Running The Better-World Puddle
Tactics
The puddle opens by using Reach for Paradise against the most emotionally vulnerable creature, then attempts to draw that victim into contact with its surface. It uses Drowning Reflection on a charmed or compelled target and keeps its body spread thin around the victim to make rescue difficult. If reduced below one-quarter of its hit points, it offers its own retreat bargain, promising to release a captive in exchange for being allowed to flow into a crack or drain; otherwise, it fights until destroyed.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with reflections that show absent companions, healed injuries, or impossible personal triumphs before anyone touches the water.
- Have the puddle speak gently and precisely through telepathy, never lie, and pause after stating its price so players understand that accepting is a choice.
- For a weaker party, reduce Drowning Reflection's ongoing damage to 1d4; for a stronger party, allow the puddle to maintain two grapples at once.
- When roleplaying a bargain, make the boon genuinely useful and the price concrete, personal, and enforceable rather than secretly changing the terms.
Loot
- Mercy-Slick Droplet — A sealed glass vial containing a drop of reflective black water. Once, when poured onto a mirror, it reveals the truthful location of a creature the user personally regrets losing.
- Bent Silver Locket — A locket from one of the puddle's victims. Inside is a portrait that changes to show the viewer with the person they most wish had survived.
