"I don't want your tears. I want back pay, nesting rights, and an apology delivered in writing." โ Hobb Nettleseed, Crowmaster
Lore & Description
Appearance
The Grievance Crowmaster is a weather-beaten scarecrow stitched from faded blue work-clothes and patched brown burlap. Its head is a crooked sack painted with a mournful face, while a brass button eye hangs loose on a thread and the other is a black crow feather driven through the cloth. Bent iron rods form its fingers, each wrapped in red union ribbons. Crows nest in its straw torso, emerge from its sleeves, and gather beneath its hat, their glossy eyes bright with fierce solidarity.
Behavior & Origins
Once called Hobb Nettleseed, this scarecrow was built to drive crows from the fields of Bellwether Farm. Instead, it listened to their complaints: poisoned grain, broken nesting trees, and farmers who took every feather and gave nothing back. Hobb organized the crows into the United Corvid Agricultural Workers, negotiated a fair share of the harvest, and became increasingly theatrical after discovering that pity was more powerful than fear. The Crowmaster now wants the mayor of Brackenvale to recognize crow labor rights, and has begun sabotaging every field whose owner refuses to sign the feather-and-grain agreement. A DM can place the union's headquarters in the abandoned threshing hall at Gallowglass Farm, where a kidnapped magistrate is being forced to hear testimony from hundreds of crows.
Running Grievance Crowmaster
Tactics
The Crowmaster opens by appearing helpless and inviting sympathy, using Burlap Sympathy to make itself seem pitiable before punishing anyone who responds. Once combat begins, it keeps enemies at medium range with Blackwing Grievance, uses Mobilize the Murder to blind clustered foes, and lets the crows harry anyone who approaches. When reduced below half its hit points, it loudly names each attack made against it and uses You Wouldn't Hit Someone This Sad; it fights to the death if the union charter is threatened, but flees if its crows are dispersed and its cause seems lost.
DM Tips
- Telegraph the danger with posted grievance notices, red ribbons tied around crow legs, and farmers insisting that nobody should apologize to the scarecrow.
- Play the Crowmaster in a trembling, wounded voice that abruptly becomes crisp and managerial whenever it issues orders to the crows.
- Track pity openly: offer players a clear chance to trigger Most Dangerous When Pitied, but do not punish ordinary compassion unless the character actually expresses it toward the Crowmaster.
- For a weaker party, reduce the murder's damage to 14 (4d6) and remove the regeneration from Crow-Signed Collective Bargaining; for a stronger party, give the Crowmaster 2 extra Rake attacks during Multiattack.
Loot
- The Feather-and-Grain Charter — A red-thread-bound contract signed by dozens of farmers and marked with hundreds of crow footprints. It can settle the local dispute, though the crows insist on enforcement.
- Hobb's Brass Button — The Crowmaster's loose eye, stamped with the emblem of the United Corvid Agricultural Workers. A crow will recognize its bearer as a neutral negotiator.
- Black Ledger of Grievances — A soot-dark book listing every broken promise made to the crows, including several names the characters may recognize.
