Mara Vell, Keeper of Spare Keys
A meticulous locksmith whose collection is protected by the most dangerous love in the city
Mara Vell runs a narrow locksmith’s shop beneath a crooked blue awning, where every key she has ever cut hangs on numbered hooks behind her. She claims the copies are for emergencies, but the collection is also the reason thieves, magistrates, and assassins leave her unharmed: the city’s most feared killer loves Mara dearly.
Appearance
Mara is a compact woman in her fifties with silver-threaded black hair, brass spectacles, and fingertips permanently darkened by oil and metal dust. A ring of tiny keys hangs from her belt, each stamped with a number rather than a name; the walls behind her counter are crowded with locked cabinets and labeled hooks. She dresses plainly except for one expensive red scarf, a gift from her beloved.
Personality & voice
Mara is patient, exacting, and nearly impossible to fluster; she pauses to straighten a key before answering an insult. Speak her lines softly and matter-of-factly, with the recurring phrase, "Everything opens eventually." She dislikes threats, but responds to them by asking practical questions such as, "Would you like that lock picked quietly or honestly?"
What they want
Mara wants to recover the master key to the sealed north gate before the city council destroys it, because she believes the gate hides an old neighborhood slated for unlawful demolition. She needs the characters to infiltrate the council clerk’s house, identify the key among several decoys, and return it without letting anyone discover her involvement. In exchange, she can duplicate nearly any mundane key and provide discreet access to places the party should not enter.
Secret
The dangerous lover is Ilyra Voss, the city’s legendary assassin, who has murdered nobles, gang bosses, and two inquisitors for threatening Mara. Ilyra is not merely a protector: she secretly lives in the locked room above the shop, and Mara has been hiding her from the authorities for years. Mara’s key archive includes copies of locks from every crime scene Ilyra ever used, meaning the collection is an evidence trove as well as a romantic keepsake; if revealed, Mara becomes both the assassin’s hostage-worthy weakness and the only person who can expose her.
Plot hooks
- A frightened magistrate hires the party to retrieve a key from Mara’s archive, then warns them that anyone who harms her will be hunted by Ilyra Voss.
- Mara asks the characters to steal the north-gate master key from the council clerk before demolition crews erase an entire hidden district.
- A copied key vanishes from the archive, and Mara begs the party to find it before its new owner uses it to frame Ilyra for a murder; if violence comes, Mara fights like a commoner, while Ilyra uses assassin statistics.
