The Apologist's Key Ring

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (key ring) Legendary
requires attunement by a creature capable of keeping secrets

This small ring is wrought from tarnished silver, its surface darkened as though by years of handling and tears. A tiny brass clasp holds its keys together, while a faded blue thread is knotted around the loop in three places. Each key is unique: some are black iron, some pale bone, some translucent glass, and some appear to be folded from thin sheets of gold. Every key bears a minute engraving resembling a closed eye. When a new key grows, the ring trembles, emits a soft metallic sigh, and pushes the key outward from its empty loop. The metal is always cold, even in firelight.

Keys Born of Silence Whenever you deliberately keep a secret for 24 consecutive hours, a new key grows from the ring at the next dawn. A qualifying secret must be information you know, could reasonably reveal, and that would materially affect another creature's decisions, safety, or feelings. The secret must remain unknown to the creature or creatures from whom you are withholding it. Trivial facts, secrets forced from you by magic, and information you have forgotten do not qualify. The ring can grow no more than one key per dawn.
Key of Admission When a key grows, you may designate one nonmagical lock you have seen or touched within the past year, or one lock whose appearance and location you know precisely. The key is magically shaped for that lock and opens it as an action without a check. A key can be used only once; after opening its designated lock, it crumbles into gray filings. If the designated lock is protected by arcane lock or a similar spell of 5th level or lower, the key suppresses that protection for 1 minute when used, then crumbles. It cannot open a lock created by a spell of 6th level or higher, an artifact, or a portal sealed by a deity.
Confession's Mercy As an action, you can openly reveal one secret currently sustaining a key on the ring to every creature within 30 feet that can hear and understand you. The revealed secret need not be the secret's original intended recipient. When you do so, you regain 2d8 + your proficiency bonus hit points, and the corresponding key vanishes without being used. Once this property restores hit points, it cannot do so again until the next dawn.
The Ring Remembers You have advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks made to determine whether a creature is concealing guilt, regret, or a significant secret. In addition, you always know the number of unused keys on the ring and whether each key was born from a secret you still keep.
Burden of the Unsaid The ring carries the emotional weight of every secret it creates. While you have three or more unused keys, you have disadvantage on saving throws against being frightened. While you have seven or more unused keys, you also have disadvantage on Charisma checks made to persuade, deceive, or inspire trust. These effects end when the number of unused keys falls below the relevant threshold.
Last Apology Once per long rest, when you fail a saving throw or when a creature you can see within 30 feet fails a saving throw, you can use your reaction to cause one unused key to dissolve. The creature that failed the saving throw rerolls it and must use the new result. The key's secret is not revealed, but the ring whispers, "I am sorry," in the voice of its maker.

Lore

The ring was made by Ilyra Venn, a royal locksmith and confidante whose silence helped cause a civil war. Ilyra had been entrusted with a secret that could have prevented the execution of an innocent heir. She kept it out of fear, then kept silent about keeping it, and finally forged this ring as an apology to everyone harmed by her cowardice. The first key grew when she concealed the ring's purpose from her dying patron. The second grew when she refused to admit why she had made it. Legends claim that every key is shaped by a secret that should have become a confession, and that the ring will never stop growing until its bearer tells the one truth they fear most.

History

Ilyra vanished after presenting the ring to the heir's younger sister, who used its keys to free prisoners, open sealed archives, and expose the conspirators behind the war. Centuries later, the ring passed through the hands of spies, priests, and thieves. One owner threw it into a sacred well after it grew a key for a secret he had kept from his own child; the ring was found the next morning hanging from the well's iron chain. Its most recent known bearer was a penitent assassin who used his final key to open the door of the person he had wronged, then confessed everything before dawn.
