(regains at dawn)
This delicate teaspoon is fashioned from dark, mirror-bright silver that never tarnishes. Its bowl is engraved with concentric ripples, and its narrow handle bears thousands of hairline tally marks that shift subtly when no one is watching. A tiny amber bead caps the handle, containing a suspended swirl of golden light resembling tea leaves caught in a whirlpool. When the spoon stirs liquid, faint images—an unfamiliar doorway, a child's hand, a face glimpsed in rain—briefly shimmer across its surface.
Ledger of Uses
The teaspoon magically records every distinct occasion on which it is used. Tiny silver tally marks appear along its handle, though only the attuned creature can read them. By holding the spoon and asking a question such as, "How many times have you stirred tea?" or "How many times have you touched salt?" the attuned creature learns the exact number of recorded uses matching that description. The spoon can distinguish actions, substances, creatures, and locations, but it cannot reveal anything about a use beyond its count. This record cannot be erased, altered, or suppressed, even by magic such as modify memory.
Stirred Memory
As an action, you can use the spoon to stir a cup, bowl, or other container of liquid for 1 minute, expending 1 charge. The liquid need not be potable. The next creature to drink at least a mouthful of that liquid within 1 hour is flooded with a vivid memory connected to a subject you name while stirring, such as a person, place, object, or event. A willing creature can choose whether the memory is one it has forgotten or one it remembers imperfectly. An unwilling creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or experience a memory chosen by the Dungeon Master that is genuinely connected to the named subject. On a successful save, the creature experiences only a momentary sensation of déjà vu. The spoon cannot create false memories, reveal information the creature never knew, or undo magical memory alteration, though it may expose emotional impressions and fragmented images associated with such tampering.
Aftertaste of Truth
For 10 minutes after a creature experiences a memory through the spoon, it has advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to identify inconsistencies, missing details, or altered portions of that memory. This benefit does not determine whether every detail is objectively true.
Persistent Tally
Each time the spoon is used for any purpose, including stirring, eating, pointing, unlocking a container, or deliberately touching an object, the Ledger of Uses records one use. Casual carrying or accidental contact does not count. The spoon's tally is permanent and continues even if the spoon changes owners.
Lore
The Remembrance Teaspoon was made for archivists who believed that history lived not in books, but in the small memories people carried without realizing it. Its creator, the halfling chronicle-witch Meribell Quill, enchanted it while preparing tea for a council of witnesses whose testimonies contradicted one another. Each stir drew out a different recollection, and the spoon began counting every motion, meal, and secret task it performed. Some sages claim the spoon now remembers more mundane history than any living library.
History
After Meribell Quill vanished, the spoon passed through the hands of inquisitors, thieves, grieving families, and one notorious royal chef. It was used to recover the memory of a murdered prince's final conversation, identify a false heir, and determine that a supposedly sacred spring had once been an ordinary kitchen well. The spoon was last seen in the collection of the Memorykeepers of Vell, whose vault was emptied overnight. The thieves left every treasure behind except this one.
