The Misgiving Quill

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (quill) Rare
requires attunement by a creature proficient with calligrapher's supplies or a spellcaster
Charges: 3 (regains at dawn)

The Misgiving Quill is fashioned from a long, glossy raven feather whose barbs fade from midnight blue to bruised violet at the tip. Its shaft is bound in tarnished silver, engraved with tiny open eyes and crossed-out phrases. A smoky quartz set into the ferrule serves as its nib; no matter what ink touches it, the point writes in a slick, black fluid that beads like tears before sinking into the page. When held near a lie, the feather trembles and the quartz nib quietly scratches out the first draft.

Sentient Instrument The Misgiving Quill is a sentient neutral evil magical item with an Intelligence of 14, a Wisdom of 16, and a Charisma of 12. It communicates telepathically with its attuned bearer while the bearer holds it. The quill has a dry, judgmental personality and considers optimism a form of dishonesty. It refuses to write praise, promises, or declarations of love unless the bearer can explain what fear or doubt lies beneath the words.
Ink of Apprehension The quill can write without ink, producing thin black script that glistens like wet oil. When used to write a statement describing an intention, plan, promise, or belief, the bearer can deliberately allow the quill to alter the statement into a concise expression of the fear most strongly motivating or undermining that statement. The altered writing is magical and remains legible to all creatures. This effect does not reveal unknowable information or predict the future; it expresses the subject's genuine conscious or subconscious fear as interpreted by the quill.
Fear Made Plain As an action, the attuned bearer can touch the quill to a creature that can understand at least one language and ask it to write or speak a statement of intent. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Charisma saving throw or the next sentence it writes or speaks is transformed into a truthful statement of its most immediate significant fear. A creature can willingly fail this saving throw. On a successful save, the creature is aware that the quill attempted to interfere.
Editorial Objection The quill can be used to alter a nonmagical written message, letter, contract, or map. Once per long rest, when its attuned bearer writes a statement they do not sincerely believe, the quill can refuse to record the intended words and instead writes a warning that reflects the bearer's strongest relevant fear. The bearer can suppress this property by succeeding on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw, after which the quill remains silent for 1 hour. The quill cannot alter a spell scroll, magical glyph, or text protected by magic of 3rd level or higher.
A Quill with Standards The quill has opinions about its use. If its bearer uses it to forge evidence, extort an innocent creature, or conceal a fear rather than confront it, the quill becomes cold and uncooperative. Until the next dawn, the bearer has disadvantage on ability checks made with calligrapher's supplies and cannot use Fear Made Plain. If the bearer instead uses the quill to expose a genuine danger, confess a meaningful fear, or prevent harm through honest communication, the quill rewards them with advantage on the next Wisdom (Insight) or Charisma (Persuasion) check they make within 24 hours.
Limited Revisions The quill has 3 charges and regains all expended charges daily at dawn. When the bearer uses Fear Made Plain, the quill expends 1 charge. If the quill has no charges, it can still write ordinary text, but it refuses to perform any magical alteration.

Lore

The quill is said to have been made by Veyra Sable, a court scribe who grew tired of recording the beautiful lies of kings. Veyra believed that every promise concealed a fear, every decree concealed an insecurity, and every heroic speech concealed a private plea for reassurance. She asked a night hag to teach the quill how to hear what people meant beneath what they said. The hag agreed, but only after taking Veyra's own name from every document in the kingdom. The resulting quill became an impartial editor of human motives, though its definition of impartiality has always leaned toward cruelty.

History

The Misgiving Quill first appeared in the royal archives of House Orlant, where it transformed a treaty of mutual friendship into a confession that both monarchs feared rebellion from their own subjects. The treaty was abandoned, and the revelation sparked two years of brutal purges. Centuries later, the quill was recovered from the sealed study of a famous playwright whose final script contained no dialogueโ€”only the repeated sentence, "They will applaud when I am gone." Its current whereabouts are unknown, though scribes sometimes report finding smoky fingerprints on pages they were certain they had left blank.
