The Apologetic Ladle
This heavy soup ladle is fashioned from dark, honey-colored hearthwood with a bowl of hammered copper. Its handle is carved with tiny flames, snowflakes, and clasped hands, while a thumb-sized amber bead rests in its end. The copper is permanently tarnished along one edge, as though exposed to winter frost, and faint steam rises from the bowl whenever someone nearby is hungry. In moments of danger, a thin layer of ice forms across its surface despite nearby heat.
Lore
The ladle was blessed by Vesta-of-the-Embers, a minor hearth god who promised a village that winter would pass gently. When the god's attention was diverted, winter lingered for thirteen months, and famine followed. To apologize, Vesta forged this ladle and bargained with Winter itself, which agreed to soften its bite wherever the ladle served a shared meal. The ladle still carries the god's remorse and Winter's reluctant favor.
History
The first ladle was presented to the village of Brindlebank by a masked divine messenger after the great Long Frost. Its first keeper, an elderly cook named Mara Pell, fed three hundred refugees from a single pot without the broth ever running out. The item disappeared when Mara died, only to reappear decades later in kitchens, roadside camps, and snowbound monasteries. Every owner eventually reports hearing it whisper, "I should have come sooner."
