The Unfinished Churchyard
A nameless graveyard where tomorrow's dead are sometimes buried today
Iron gates open onto leaning headstones, wet grass, and a chapel whose bell rings without a rope. Every stone bears fresh-cut lettering that changes when no one is looking, and some names belong to people still living beyond the walls. No map made after 984 includes this place, though older maps disagree about where it stands.
Atmosphere
Mist clings low between the graves, carrying the smells of rain, turned earth, and extinguished candle wax. The only sounds are distant shovels, the soft scratching of stone on stone, and the chapel bell tolling once whenever someone speaks a dead person's name. Sunlight enters strangely: shadows point toward the oldest tomb even at noon.
Notable features
The headstones can be rubbed clean, chipped, or pried from the ground, but their inscriptions reappear by dawn; copying one onto paper causes the ink to rearrange itself into a date. A locked chapel contains a brass death register chained to the altar, a bell rope that descends into the earth, and a trapdoor beneath the sexton's desk. At the center stands the Hollow Yew, whose roots have pushed through several coffins and can be climbed into a narrow upper bough overlooking the entire yard.
Who you'll meet
Mara Venn, the living sexton, insists she has worked here for three hundred years and begs visitors not to read the newest stones aloud. Brother Caldus, a ghostly priest with a missing face, offers directions in exchange for one secret the speaker has never told anyone. The Crow-Boy, a silent child in a black coat, steals keys and returns them beside the graves of people who will soon need them.
Secrets & dangers
A headstone may update early, naming a living creature and the exact hour of its death; destroying it delays nothing and instead transfers the inscription to a nearby stone. The chapel's register contains the graveyard's true location, but reading the current page causes the reader's name to appear in the next blank entry. Beneath the Hollow Yew lies an open crypt where unfinished corpses wait in niches; if disturbed, they emerge wearing the faces of anyone whose death has been recorded prematurely.
Plot hooks
- A party member finds their own name freshly carved into a headstone, with only six hours before the listed death.
- A local ruler asks the characters to recover a stone bearing the name of an heir who vanished before the graveyard could claim them.
- An old map leads the party to the churchyard, but the exit vanishes behind them unless they discover which grave was erased from every newer map.
