Mara Venn, the Last Quench
A practical blacksmith whose blades touch holy water—and whose mysterious weekly appointment cannot be missed
Mara Venn runs a soot-black forge where every finished blade is plunged into a basin of consecrated water. She claims it is an old smithing habit, though she cannot explain why she arrives at the abandoned chapel every Moonday before dawn and waits for someone who never visibly comes.
Appearance
Mara is broad-shouldered, ash-flecked, and missing the tip of her left index finger. She wears a leather apron stamped with dozens of tiny silver nailheads, and a blue glass vial hangs from her belt beside her hammer. Her quenching trough is lined with worn prayer tiles; whenever a blade hisses in the water, a faint smell of rain fills the forge.
Personality & voice
She is blunt, observant, and unfailingly courteous to anyone carrying a weapon that needs repair. Mara speaks in short, measured sentences and taps her hammer twice against the anvil before answering difficult questions. Her catchphrase is, "Steel remembers what we put in it," delivered as practical advice rather than mysticism.
What they want
Mara wants the party to recover a stolen reliquary from a bandit shrine before her next Moonday appointment. She insists the reliquary contains only old chapel water, but she offers free repairs, silvered nails, and a substantial discount on weapons if the characters return it unopened. If pressed, she admits that missing the appointment for a second consecutive week would be dangerous for everyone in town.
Secret
Mara's appointment is with the ghost of Saint Orra, the chapel's former smith, who appears only in the reflection of the holy-water basin. Years ago, the apparition taught Mara to quench weapons this way and has been quietly steering her toward blades capable of killing a fiend that is slowly awakening beneath the town. Mara is not a believer, but she has seen the ghost predict three deaths correctly—and one prediction names the next person who enters her forge.
Plot hooks
- A newly forged sword screams when quenched, and Mara begs the characters to follow the sound into the sealed chapel crypt.
- The party's weapons begin to rust after Mara misses her appointment, while every undead creature in town gains an unnatural interest in her forge.
- The ghost of Saint Orra appears to one character instead of Mara and claims the blacksmith has been receiving the wrong instructions for years.
