Merrit Vell, Cheese Merchant and Extremely Subtle Spy
A loudmouthed cheesemonger whose espionage is obvious to everyone except the people he serves
Merrit Vell arrives with a handcart of wheels, wedges, and coded messages hidden beneath the wax rinds. He wears a false mustache that is visibly glued on crooked, asks wildly suspicious questions, and somehow survives every attempted arrest, assassination, and double-cross. Merrit is terrified of the person who holds his debt—and certain the party will eventually meet them.
Appearance
Merrit is a narrow, pink-cheeked man in a flour-dusted blue coat, with a brass cheese knife worn openly at his belt and a fake mustache that changes shape whenever he replaces it. His cart displays labels such as SECRET GOUDA and ABSOLUTELY NOT A DEAD-DROP CAMEMBERT, while tiny flags mark nearby guards, nobles, and exits. He smells strongly of smoked cheese and lavender oil, supposedly to confuse tracking hounds.
Personality & voice
Merrit speaks in a loud stage whisper and narrates his own suspicious behavior: “Pay no attention to the message I am concealing beneath this perfectly ordinary cheese.” He calls everyone “colleague,” even while betraying them, and punctuates lies by offering samples. He is quick, practical, and genuinely brave when someone else is in danger; use a commoner’s statistics if he comes to blows, though he fights with a cheese knife and surprising desperation.
What they want
Merrit needs to deliver three coded cheese wheels to agents in different districts before sunset, then persuade the party to escort him to the next town. He cannot leave the route without losing his only chance to clear a debt, so he offers useful information, free provisions, and increasingly absurd bribes to secure their help. If pressed, he admits the delivery is not about money: it will determine whether his debtor considers him useful or disposable.
Secret
Merrit’s espionage is not incompetence but deliberate camouflage: his obvious blundering makes guards dismiss him as harmless, while his real reports are hidden in the arrangement of cheese labels and wheel sizes. He owes the party’s future acquaintance—an influential fixer, crime lord, royal spymaster, or seemingly respectable patron—a life-debt incurred when that person saved Merrit from execution. The debt is now being called in, and Merrit’s assignment may require him to betray the party after they have earned his trust.
Plot hooks
- Merrit hires the party to guard a cheese shipment, but one wheel contains a coded warning that a member of their escort is the intended assassin.
- The party later meets Merrit’s creditor, who demands that they hand over Merrit as payment for his debt—or recover the missing message Merrit secretly kept.
- A rival spy abducts Merrit, leaving behind a cart full of cheeses whose labels form a map to a planned coup; Merrit insists the map is merely a shopping list.
